At 4 months old it is still under guarantee so take it back to where you bought it from
    OR
take it back to the 'Professional' who 'fixed' your screen.

My advice to see the professional was because if they have caused the problem they should fix it without any further charges as they have already been paid to fix your screen.
Hope you get some help from someone.

just curious why my 500 GB hard disk only showing 33 GB and on that 33 GB also if i try to format and clean install window 7 it gives me a message"setup was unable to create new system partition or locate an existing system partition.See the setup log files for more information."
Looks like Sony vaio recovery tool locking hard drive and wont let me do anything ..Any idea how can i recover my space and even clean this recovery partition.

Does Windows 7 ever start or does it go no further than the Sony error?

EDIT: Also doe F8 repeatedly at bootup give you any advanced startup options such as Safe Mode? Last Known Good Configuration would be my first choice.

At the F8 prompt do you have the option to "Repair your Computer" if that is available then choose it and see if finds your Win7 installation and attempts to fix start up problems.

If you don't have that option then download this win7 recovery environment ISO http://digiex.net/downloads/downloa.../2660-windows-7-64-bit-x64-recovery-disc.html and burn it to a blank CD as an image file. Imgburn can write the CD using the "Write image file to Disc" option.

Then boot from the CD and choose the "Repair you Computer" option on the Installation screen. Let it try the startup repairs. If they don't work then boot to the disc again and choose the advanced tools option. From there choose Command Prompt. type in the following commands hitting the <enter> key after each one.

    diskpart
    list volume

Post the information returned so we can see the partitions on the HD.

Whenever you are ready if fine.

If you have Win7 installed then no need to burn the 32bit disc since you can run diskpart from within Win7 at the command prompt (cmd.exe).

But instead of diskpart what does Disk Management say about your HD. Go to Start button and type in disk management and hit <enter>. In the window that opens you should see a graph of your HD. What does it say under Disk 0 about the size of the drive? Does it show unallocated space next to your 33gb partition?

See if you can find the model number of your hard drive.
Computer>right-click C: drive and select Properties. Then on Hardware tab get the model number of the HD. (Or you can get it from Device Manager under Disk Drives.) I just want to make sure that there is a 500gb drive still in the machine.

I am not sure how a SATA HD could be showing the wrong size like that. Have you tried going into BIOS to see how it sees the HD? I'll try to find a guide to see what your BIOS/setup screens look like if you need help navigating.

I am going to continue looking for clarification on the HD showing only 31.5GB. What I have found is this number 31.5 seems to be a common problem but I have not been able to find the reason or a good solution. I am only posting to let you know that if the drive is not being seen in BIOS as 500gb then the following program or something similar may be the only way to get BIOS to see the drive correctly. I am going to continue looking for the actual reason the smaller reported size occurs but just wanted to give you a chance to look at the link and the comments section.

This program which has to be run from Windows may work without data loss but it seems the drive would have to be connected to another computer.

    Hey there,

It is most unusual for a HDD to suddenly decide to miss-report its HDD size.
Its not entirely uncommon for a HDD, prior to failing to give errors squeal or slow before issues become chronic..unless it is dropped etc.. I suppose there are some virus that do affect the boot block etc, not that I am inferring that this is the problem here.

According to the following link below, the default install of win 7 wouldnt fit on a HDD partition of only 15.69Gb anyways?? even for 32 bit version of 7 see supposed updated specs here.

    http://www.osnews.com/story/21413/Microsoft_Makes_Windows_7_Minimum_Requirements_Official

Also note the free space on C: ( boot )
This partition reports to be only 15.69GB and with 2.45gb free space so the install is only 13.24 GB :confused

C:\ boot > has a NTFS format partition 15.69.. was it the 64bit version of Win7 which was installed? as that listed in the above website requires a 20Gb install?

    Hope this helps :wave

ihope the Tech repair guy was an honest one.

    Hi necro61,
Thanks, it looks like his Win7 cache is on the second partition perhaps that is how Win7 installed in such a small partition?
I'm thinking that when the screen was broken maybe something happened to the HD at the same time. So when the screen was replaced it just allowed him to see the problem with the HD that was already there.

I've read at least 50 threads on the matter and after getting rid of the ones related to FAT32 and LBA48 32gb limits, I still can't come up with the exact cause. I can only say that trying the atola program linked above or HDAT2 would be the two things I would try. The atola program would be easiest since it is one click. If it doesn't work then I will experiment with the HDAT2 program on an old HD but it seems a bit technical a program.

This post has a link to both programs and a pdf for HDAT2 that will be informative if you have to use it.

    *******
    Just for background:
This is the limit I think you are hitting although yours is not caused by an old Award BIOS but by something being damaged and your BIOS defaulting to reading the disk as 65,536 cylinders instead of what is really there because it can't read the true number of cylinders. http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/bios/sizeGB315-c.html

I think that is the best plan. Especially, since it is only showing as 31gb in BIOS. Definitely, seems like there is something that needs to be corrected in the sectors at the beginning of the disk. Good Luck! :)
