    Dear Board,

I appreciate any help you might have.

I had originally posted in the Malware forum, but was referred here for now. I was going through the Read Me steps for Malware Removal. I had reached the running of Combofix and it had begun scanning.

Suddenly, my computer shut down (I had walked away for a moment), and when it restarted, I received this message: "Windows did not shut down properly."

I started it in normal mode and when the screen for entering my password came up, everything was frozen. I couldn't (can't) move the cursor or type in my password. I tried to power off/turn it back on, with the same result.

I've also tried to open in safe mode, but the password screen appears again and it is frozen.

    I have a Toshiba Satellite L515-S4960/ Windows 7/32 bit/ Pentium T4300.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

    Thank you , falconattack.

First, yes that is my computer.

Second, I'm trying to download the avira rescue cd but it just isn't progressing. It's been 30 minutes and not even 1% has downloaded. Does it generally take this long?

Sorry about that- I was reading too quickly.

I left my computer at work and won't be back till Thursday.

I can download from the new link (thanks!).

So, I'll check back on Thursday after I get this set up.

    Many thanks again.

Hi-thanks again for trying to help.

So, I can't find out how much free capacity I have because I can't get into the computer. Is there any way to check doing the system repair?

    Hi,

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration from the F8 Safe/Advanced mode options? Maybe try that.

If that doesn't work do you have Repair your computer option on that F8 page? If so go to it and choose the Command Prompt and type chkdsk /r and hit <enter> to check your filesystem. see if that makes any difference when booting.

    Hi,

Yes, I tried the Last Known Good Configuration (is this the same as System Restore?) from the F8 Safe/Advanced options, but with no luck

I also tried the chkdsk /r command, but got this message:
The type pof the file system is NTFS
    Cannot lock current drive.
Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.

Is the Toshiba Recovery Wizard a viable option?

    Thanks again!

Toshiba repair may very well be an option but I am unsure if that would include formatting the drive and thus erasing your personal files. I can take a look at the manual.

When you tried the chkdsk what was your prompt? ie x:\> or C:\>

You can try chkdsk c: /r

Also note the total size of disk (towards end of results) and post it here so I can be sure we are checking the correct drive letter.

I haven't done that- since it's a laptop, do you mean to get another keyboard and plug it into the usb port?

I'm trying to do the Avira, but don't the capability to burn the cd-rom. I'm still looking for a computer to do this.

    Thanks,

Yes, toshiba satellites are laptops and you can plug in external KBs and mice, hence the 'external' part. Not to freak you out but most laptops you can hook up monitors too.

OK- it ran this time! The prompt was x:\>

the total disk space is at the end:
    302640127 KB

    space available on disk:
    262539256

Thanks so much for ALL of your help,

So chkdsk completed but you still hang at the password screen.
Have you tried System Restore from the list of F8 Advanced startup options (On the same screen as command prompt choice)? I'm not sure if one of the malware programs you tried turns that off or not but it would be a good option if available to go back to a time before this started.

    HI,

OK- so I did use an external keyboard and mouse and now it works!!!

But, I tried to run combofix (again, and it was when I ran it last time that my keyboard and mouse stopped working), and then a blue screen appeared and shut my computer down.

Should I move this discussion to the malware forum again?

    Thanks again,
    Y

Yes, I would ask advice in malware about the combofix problem. They may have seen it before or be able to give you some advice about a work around to using it.

I'd go into device manager and remove the mouse and keyboard and reboot & see if the original ones worked again.

HI- I'm back again after getting help from the malware forum.

Just so I don't screw things up, I'm looking for some elementary help on this.

I went into device manager and see the following for keyboard and mouse:

    Keyboards
    HID Keyboard Device
Standard PS/2 Keyboard (with yellow exclamation mark next to it)

    Mice and other pointing devices
    HID - compliant mouse
Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad (with yellow exclamation mark next to it)

So, what am I to do here?

    Thanks again for helping,
    Y

    Hi,

I downloaded the touchpad driver, but can't seem to get it working. Is there something I'm missing?

    Thanks,
    Y

Try starting the Human Interface Device service. It should be set to Manual. You may have some files missing due to the malware.
