I just finished my first play through of Gears of War 3, I definitely think the controls, visuals, story, general game play is better all across the board.

That is all I ever want in a sequel........To have the game do everything it did before, just a tweaked to be better. Like if you like tall blondes, I don't want the next one to be a short brunette(I like all women). This game definitely pulled off the better looking blonde theme, if you get my drift.

I'm gonna be playing this until Elder Scrolls V, I gotta get out all my shooter energy to make room for all my role playing energy.

My son is visiting and brought his PS3 with the Beta of Battlefield 3.

Quite impressed so far, looks pretty, plays well, one of the least glitchy Beta's I've played in a very long time.
This one could be the final nail in the Coffin of COD.

Just bought ARMA X anniversary edition, came this morning at 10.00am:zzz Unbelievable bargain, every single ARMA title to date for £27.99 from play.com ,works out around £5 per title/expansion pack.

    http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/218...hsource=0&searchstring=arma+x&urlrefer=search

I shall be installing ARMA 1 from the pack as soon as I've finished typing this. I hope it lives up to my expectations or is at least approaching the quality of operation flashpoint,my computer should demolish the video also since it was released so long ago which was one of the major snags I believe.

I started playing 'protoype' on the PC a couple of days ago which is o.k but not really my kinda game with all the slashing and button bashing which is what spurred me on to buy ARMA 'finally'.

Okay...well, after posting a couple of days ago in here I decided to give Gray Matter another chance. It's actually rather good now I have to say. :)

Arma 2 is better than Arma 1.
The first one was more buggy, both are awesome and if they have fixed the issues the first had then it's all good.

After you have played it through you should dive into the editor..... Your life as you know it will be over :-D

As for comparing to OF, much harder and more realistic. Much more in depth and ultimately more rewarding.
Basically it's less cinematic, you're going to die if you don't think and very quickly.
It's main draw for me is that you can play with that intense feeling while moving slowly and plotting out tactics etc.
Another thing I absolutely love is the fact that the sniper rifles are extremly realistic, it's helpful if you understand how to line up a shot and figure out distance and wind. Use the scope markings to figure out the size of your target.
With some you can drop a variable scope and alter the sight to the distance of your choice, obviously up to max range.
A 1400m shot with a rifle sighted in at 800m with variable wind is a tricky one to pull off.

Ok I'll stop, I could go on about this game all day :-D

    You're going to love it!

I'm toying with the idea of walking The Lonesome Road....

I've gotta get this game. I got the other 2 the day they came out. :drool I didn;t think I'd enjoy it as much as I did, but I really loved it. As far as ARMA goes, I've not tried it out but at that price, I'll have to check it out soon.

Yup Flashpoint was a turkey shoot, this is no comparison I'm actually scared half to hell of the AI:-D And I'm starting on regular with all the help enabled, after first completion I'm gonna do it all again on veteran.

As with most games I don't want to do this I just bang everything up to hardest to make it a challenge you have less health and you weapons don't work as well but its exactly the same game second play through. With ARMA there is no limit to the amount of ways you can complete a mission its all down to your ingenuity.

I'm having a semi frustrating time ATM adapting to the learning curve, there have been quite a few times I've been screaming out loud "NO NO NO!":-D as I see a guy flanking me and can't react in time but its been enjoyable.

I'm actually reminded of a little game called hidden and dangerous 2?Dunno if you've heard or played it.

  8. lego126

    lego126 DJ's Geeky Dad

Red orchestra heros of Stalingrad is almost impossible on Hero. The later missions aren't to bad because of Air support. I've heard Shogun, total war 2 has incredible AI. I'm gonna start it next week, as well as Batman Arkam Asylum as well. I've not played a batman game in almost 10 yrs. but it got great reviews, so I've gotta check it out.

  9. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

The learning curve is very steep yes, but I strongly recommend playing through the tutorials, they are well worth the time and will enhance your experience much faster and will also take out much of the frustration.

The friendly AI leaves a little to be desired and like OF will often do something you didn't ask them to do.

If you want the ultimate challenge, put it on hardest with the ACE mods enabled, the only thing more realistic is war itself, with ACE turned on EVERYTHING makes a difference, it also switches off your HUD and many map icons/waypoints etc.
Very very hard but really gives you a sense of realism no other FPS has ever offered.

But don't just get stuck in the pre-made missions. This game is possibly one of the biggest games I've ever played with virtually limitless possibilities.

This is a post I update once in a while, you may have read it... if not I'm extremely offended :-D
I actually used it more as "An Account" of what I've tried etc...

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=231553

With all the hours/days/weeks I spent simply playing with the editor, I still never even scratched the surface, I didn't get into heavy coding or base building etc.

Best word to describe this game = Colossal.

    Enjoy.

As for me, I've been playing "From Dust" , a God-Like game sort of like Populas but you only have control over the land. It feels like more of a show-case/puzzle game than a world builder. But awesome physics and visuals.
There's just something really satisfying about playing with the elements to such a scale of preventing or creating tidal waves/volcanic eruptions/earthquakes..... no? how about diverting rivers and streams to fertilize land or scooping up molten lava to drop in water to create a dam of mabey just to stop a village from burning...feeling mean? then save them rom burning by dumping 5000 gallons of water on them and watch them get pulled away by the torrent of water.
Such a huge scale feeling. You will never do the same challenge the same way twice and the possibilities are huge as to HOW you want to play.
It really does make you feel like you have God Like power.
I highly recommend to anyone who likes World builder type puzzle games.

Bought the Steam Fallout pack (FO 1, 2 and BOS)

Never played the old ones and figured my laptop will run them just fine.

So my Fallout Adventure begins :)

I must admit, I'm having a little trouble adjusting to the older style of game and trying to figure out how things work is taxing lol But fun none the less.

Yeah, so still playing Fallout and still have no idea what I'm doing.
I think I'm missing something, I'm getting through it by following the walkthrough but I can't see to find any sort of objective or waypoint that tells me where to look or even what direction to go in. I wish I had a manual that explains the HUD and menus lol

Fallout 3/NV are much easier to navigate :-D

Oh, I just started Dungeon Siege 3 and Shogun Total war 2 yesterday.
Dungeon Siege is a real let down. :cry As for Total War, ... I'm just on the tutorial, but it's really complex.

  22. lego126

    lego126 DJ's Geeky Dad

Ok after a lil' more dungeon crawling... Dungeon Siege 3 isn't as bad I initially thought. The camera and engine, are kinda' like the PSP game untold legends. It's ok, but as far as playing the game more than once... noway.. there is limited character customization, and not much variations as far as decisions made during the game.

How's Dark Souls Mimsy? I almost pickup it up today, figured I'd get another gamers thoughts before I spend 60 bucks.

I really recommend Batman Arkham asylum its a great game,a little on the short side but its made up with presentation that's second none a la Max payne.

Just finished ARMA 1,phew! Definitely felt unfinished and has a few little bugs even with the latest patch but gave me my operation flashpoint fix.

Just started ARMA 2,video is much improved over ARMA 1 then I got past all the tutorials which ran silky smooth on max settings and then blam 30fps for most of the second level even with everything set to normal !:confused That's with an overclocked GTX480 and and overclocked I7 930,I'm amazed how unoptimized this game is.

I average prolly 50-60FPS but every so often "too often" the whole thing just comes to a crawl.

I checked to see if it was my hardware and it isn't,even 6 core SLI rigs score low with this game as it can't make use of 6 cores or SLI.

Oh well better get back to it,BTW NED I'll check out your post;)

  24. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

@Rikky... Oh both games are very technically UN-sound as far as run-a-bility goes, major difference can be made by dropping the draw distance. You don't need the full 6km anyway.
I run it around 4.5km although that's not with max settings but it makes a major difference.
Only game I've ever seen with a Draw distance bar that changes real time, really nice idea.

Glad you are liking it, it's certainly very different from everything else ever made. You will enjoy Arma 2 more since it runs sooooo much better in every way.

Have you got the add-ons? The UK Forces and Arrowhead etc etc?

Also you can mod the absolute crap out of it, you may have already found this but....

    http://www.armaholic.com/

Everything you need to know or want to try.

@Lego... I actually came to the conclusion that Shogun 2was not for me, not because it was complicated or anything more than the others. I just didn't like it much, mind you I really enjoy playing as Britain and obviously can't in this installment.

It's pretty much Demons' Souls on steroids. Its gorgeous, beautiful, challenging, frustrating, addicting, and maybe the best and most unforgiving dungeon crawl ever.

So totally worth the pre-order. :)

  26. Rikky

Yup got everything with the anniversary X edition including some military themed post cards -D "Its been a month in the ARMA mum,we dig all day then lay an all night ambush,I haven't eaten for days and my frame rate keeps dropping below 40FPS because Bohemia didn't optimise for quad cores, its hell mum,I'll write again soon...":-D

I have the draw distance down to 1500 to stop it going below 35fps ATM,this is prolly harder for me because I'm used to running at 60+ FPS with Vsync on and there isn't currently a computer in existence that can run ARMA like that.

I wasn't gonna mod at all just run it stock then I realised they still have that stupidly bright blinding sun:( That's got modded away pronto with a no sun mod,its worked great using arma launcher the mod launcher, now that got me thinking:confused Now what else is there?:-D

Stupid friendly AI event of the day,the first transport helicopter mission I ordered my squad into the chopper and one of then was struggling at the back so I got out to see what the trouble was and he was dead,he'd walked straight the tail rotor.

I simultaneously laughed and cried:-D I couldn't decide if it was bad thing or if it was just part of the fun:confused

What I really need Ned is a good list of the best user created campaigns and missions or if you can recommend some?

  27. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

I haven't actually tried any user created missions etc, I made all my own.
But the site I gave you a link to are pretty good, I've not had anything bad from them.

As for mods, what mods are there?..... Name it, it probably exists, guns, people, cloths, units, armor, helos, bikes, maps.... the list goes on and on.
The ACE (Advanced Combat Environment)mod makes the game a lot more realistic, I love it but it's hard work playing with it on.
I also have the AC-130 mod, various Weapon packs and the "On-the-fly" weapon mod, the ability to choose a weapon from the box along with compatible scopes/silencers/launchers etc etc etc.
Most of that type of thing can only be used in custom missions, which reminds me... when downloading custom missions you need to make sure you have any/all mods that particular mission was built with.
For exmaple: My AC-130 mission requires ACE, AC-130, UK Sniper pack, US custom pack and UK Forces pack.
(Don't remember the exact names of these mods but that's pretty close.)

You have to remember , they have given you the game engine to play with so the whole game is pretty much 100% customizable.
Funny though, I always liked the sun, in fact I have been to places on the map and watched the sunrise over the mountains or sea, spectacular!

Now, you reminded me of something, this is VERY IMPORTANT!
The helicopter pickup you use in the main mission, when placing the landing/pick up marker, make 100% SURE it is in a really good clearing, no trees or buildings because the pilot is retarded, I have been in the helicopter and he has crashed into a building killing us all.... I am NOT kidding.

The friendly AI does some dumb things as you mentioned, this is where it really shows that this was never really a "Game" , as far as "Game" build quality goes, Arma is horrible.
It's a simulator based on the same ideas certain Military's use.

It's damn funny while being very annoying though.

Cool, you're enticing me back to this game dammit! I'm busy with New Vegas and Skyrim is coming :-D

As for the AI, to be honest that was the one thing I felt was unrealistic and unbalanced, the enemy AI still uses an autobot aim feature similar to that of COD or Battlefield, which means once they are triggered they aim at you with a delay in fire and a % hit ratio.
You kind of get used to it though, out think them.
It's kind of scary though, you're walking along and enemy fire starts cracking around you and you have noooooo idea where he/they are or how many. Love it! :strong

Currently playing Rage, I like it a whole lot more than Gears of War 3. Maybe it's just my style though.

I will say the 3 negative things about the game are this.........One is that it is a roam around game, and with that said, you really don't get to truly roam around and discover new adventures, your roaming is forced into focused paths. Two is that the auto save doesn't actually save anything unless you are entering an exiting town and a few other areas, just note that just because you see the words"Auto Save" at the bottom doesn't mean it is actually saving your progress. Three is that I really wanted the monsters to respawn so I could go wipe out a hideout a second time around, but it just stays empty until another mission pops up and they magically reappear.

    Can't wait for Skyrim.
