If Windows 7 did not give you an option to use Startup Repair do the following. First try safe mode and select Repair Computer. Then Startup Repair. If you cannot get into safe mode than do the following.

Boot your Install or System Recovery CD and select Startup Repair. If you do not have an Install or System Recovery CD you can download it here. You will have to burn the iso image with burning software like Nero or Imgburn. Boot the CD, it should find your OS and then click next and then select Startup Repair.

This can also mean that the hard drive is failing because it cannot find Bootmgr.

Done what you said when put the disk it loaded files then started to run then stopped and i got this

the file or directory D:\Windows.old is corrupt and unreadable. please run the CHKDSK utility.

Did you install Windows 7 over Vista? D:\Windows.old would indicate a previous version of Windows.

You can try booting up the System Recovery Disk you burned and do the following.

    Select command prompt and type:

    c: <enter>

    Then type

    chkdsk/r <enter>

What is the make and model of the laptop?

got this in the command promp

the type of the file system is NTFS
    CANNOT LOCK CURRENT DRIVE

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process ,Chkdsk may run if this is dismounted first,
all oppened handlesto this volume would then be invali
would you like to force a dismount on this volume <Y/N>

    so do i force a dismount ?

  9. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Yes, force the dismount.

    paul70 Corporal

what after that tgell, reboot ?

  11. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes, but I am not sure why it is asking that the drive was to be unmounted as you are booting from the recovery disk, correct? Windows should not have been mounted in the first place. Kind of confusing.

okay, try this at the command prompt of the System Recovery CD. Press enter after every line.

    bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    c:
    cd boot
    attrib bcd -s -h -r
    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    bootrec /RebuildBcd

    Then reboot.

  14. paul70

    paul70 Corporal

that was the first thing i tried tgell ,then i came on here

  15. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

    At the command prompt type:

    bootrec /FixMbr

    Then

    bootrec /FixBoot

    Reboot

If this does not solve the problem, I am out of ideas and hopefully somebody here can help out.

I suspect the partition table in the boot sector is corrupt, and if that is correct, and as long as there aren't any other serious errors on the disk, it should be possible to rebuild the partition table using a tool like Easeus Partition Master. There is a free version on MG as well as the Pro version $39.95, though they give the Pro version away from time to time. Irritatingly, the descriptions do not state whether or not it can recover lost partitions, so although I know the Pro version can, I don't know whether the free version can.

You would need to install the program on a working computer, burn the bootable Linux version from the installed program and run it on the broken comp.

    Good luck :)

Just spotted it - the free version DOES have the partition recovery wizard. Way to go!

That does exactly the same job as Easeus Partition Master I posted about in #16. I could help you with using that as I use it myself. Is there some reason you've gone for this lesser known product?

EDIT - there is a video on your link showing you exactly how you rebuild the MBR.

    Hi,

Try starting from your Win7 disc and choosing repair to get to the command prompt.
    Type diskpart and hit <enter>
Type list volume and hit <enter>
Post back the results of that command. I want to see if you have the 100mb system reserved partition.

    Hi,

Let's see. I read that as you having 120gb HD with a C: partition that is too small to contain Win7; a 100gb partition that must be your Windows partition and a 9gb recovery partition.

Do you have a full Win7 installation disc or only the recovery disc such as tgell gave a link to earlier? I want to know if you have the ability to do a full Win7 install.

Let's see what is on the C: and D: drives.
Get to the command prompt that will be X:\...> and type
    C: and hit <enter>
    dir and hit <enter>
Give the list of files. If there are more than 10 just give 7 or 8 names we are looking for WINDOWS and USERS and possibly config.sys.

Same thing for the D: drive so at the command prompt (now showing as C:\>) type in
    D: and hit <enter>
    dir and hit <enter>
    List a few files

this is the fix for it mate ,

    downloaded this
    http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html

    the bootable cd version

boot up then make one partition. Delete all partitions then make one new one > format NTFS. Now your ready to install your O/S

this fixed the problem , thanks to everybody that helped
