XP Home hangs on restsrt

Anytime I click on restart or when it is done by a program that instigates the restart itself, it hangs on the first page. I then have to power down the computer and start it manually.

 

This really won't help , but mine did the same thing too. In the course of time I must have touched on a setting somehow and it just stopped . Works fine now .Hope you get help , I would like to know too!!!!

 

It hangs on Saving Settings? One thing that can slow shutdown is if the PC is set to delete the page file at shut down. I appreciate the suggestions plodr but that's more than I care to do to solve this problem. I guess I'll just have to live with it.

 

A couple of months ago, someone reported a problem with a Very Slow shut down, which was caused by the pagefile being
reset to be cleared at shut down.

It did not cause any problems with startup.

Can you give a little more info about what you see during a failed startup, on any previous screen display and where
it actually gets hung up.

One simple thing to try is to schedule a chkdsk run (disk error checking) for the system drive at next boot up.

You can set this up through My Computer or Windows Explorer by Right clicking on the system drive, presumably C:.

It does nothing strange during the shutdown phase, it hangs up after trying to restart. It hangs up on the computer name page "Biostar" It's the first page when starting the computer. During a cold boot, it stays on the "Biostar" page for about 5 seconds. Thanks for the response BTW.



I tried your suggestion of checking for errors and it said I didn't have the right to check this drive. I'm puzzled by that one as after I did a clean reinstall, I made sure to just enter one admin.

 

Do you have a USB device plugged in when you reboot? Maybe it's getting stuck on that.

 

By golly, that's what it was. I unplugged it and clicked on restart and it hummed right through it. Why does it not hang up on a cold boot?
