The laptop only has sound when I run the Toshiba PC diagnostic Tool.

When I play anything from the internet or put a DVD or CD in there is no sound. The DVD plays and shows the movie, but no sound.

I have gone completely thru and made sure every sound control is turned on to maximum.

I have ran the trouble shooters.

I have gone onto Microsoft and ran all the fix its, tried querying the problem on the internet and tried everything I can find to try.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Drivers are updated.

    Windows XP home edition

Yes, my apologies, I didn't list everything.

But under sound, video and game controllers in device manager, no exclamantion points and digital is enabled.

I don't suppose you've unchecked "digital" then tried some sounds?

Yes, and I tried both analog and stereo for settings...

What happens when you run dxdiag.exe ?

Performed on sound and heard no music, or sound.

Toshiba has different realtek sound chips for the P35 and different drivers. Can you get the exact model number. There should be a S with 3digit or 4 digit number after P35. Was the driver downloaded from Toshiba's site or was it from Realtek's site.

Edit: So on the main page of dxdiag it did not give any errors on drivers installed?

Update: my apologies, I did not read the report... until now...

    per dxdiag.exe report:

Directsoundtest results: Failure at step 19 (user application verification of software) HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

Open Device Manager and right click your sound device. Select Properties and then the Details tab. In the Property drop down box select Hardware ID's and then Post the Vendor and Device ID here.

FYI... I uninstalled Realtek AC97 and reinstalled from the recovery cd furnished with the laptop, and it still doesn't have sound and still has the same error code

I uninstalled RT AC97, used drive wiper to clean up three folders, then reinstalled from the link you provided.

'If' I put my ear against a speaker in a quiet room I can barely hear music playing from a cd, and I hear 'no' system sounds.

Double click the speaker icon in the system tray. Are all the sliders set to maximum? How is the sound if you plug in a headset?

Hi tgell... the answers to your question are "yes", and "none"... I am at my wits end, this is such a seemingly small problem, I thought...

:major But I never give up... btw... the person (my sister) who had this computer before me told me "the sound doesn't work"...

    Well,
Believe it or not, that vendor and device Id shows up at pcidatabase.com as an ATI/AMD chip

    Chip Number: SB200
    Chip Description: AC'97 Audio Controller

    They recommend this driver.

Uninstall your realtek driver and try this one. Remember to also use Drivesweeper. If this does not work, I am out of ideas and would not know what else to try. Sorry.

No luck with this either... FYI... I submitted a request to Toshiba to have a tech contact me about the problem. I will keep everyone informed. Thanks for all your help, it was much appreciated.

OK... I hope this helps someone else as it fixed my problem... go to this link, and if it doesn't show the Direct X 9.0c download, type it in search and it will take you there... it is Microsoft's site and it fixed my problem by using this to update the drivers.

Thanks again for all the help and again, I hope this helps someone else...

Good work! Glad you finally sorted it out and thanks for the feedback.

Edit: What driver did you end up using on this computer?

Here is the one that fixed my problem...

    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4341&SUBSYS_FF011179&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&A5

OR... exercised the computer demons... lol

It appears to be the same one, BUT... I did not get the 'unauthorized' warning when this one installed from Microsofts website.
