    I am using a HP Compaq Presario running Windows Vista sp2;
I ran a scan with Everest, and the log is attached with the rest of my system information.

I have been experiencing driver problems for quite some time. First the "microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery driver" does not show up in device manager and I can not run the laptop from battery at all. I have not been able to find a solution to this problem. I have been told a full reformat is the only way (which is not an option).

Secondly there seems to be an issue with my usb device drivers.
However, there is one USB device that works with no problems which is an 8GB OCZ flash drive, so I have confirmed the usb ports do work.

Anything else that I plug in to the laptop starts the driver wizard, even plug and play devices that should need no drivers to function.

The only way I can get my compact flash usb card reader to show up in drives is to go to device manager > delete the "Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader"driver under Universal Serial Bus Controllers > restart my computer with the card reader plugged in > cancel the request from windows to install new driver software. Then it shows up in the drive list and works perfectly. Until it is unplugged, and then I have to repeat the process above to get it to work again. It is very counter intuitive, but it is the only workaround I have found. The driver in device manager shows "This device is working properly." Yet it is not. It only works when the driver is uninstalled, it seems to reappear every time the device is unplugged.

    * I just tried this method again earlier and it didn't work. I am extremely confused.

And the most recent thing that has stopped working due to drivers is the webcam, it says "there is no device driver associated with the device". It has worked perfectly since I got the laptop, then suddenly became unresponsive. It is listed twice in device manager as "HP webcam 101", one is under "Universal serial bus controllers" and the other is under "Other devices". (see screenshot below).

Everything I have tried has failed. I do not have any disks with drivers, so I am relying on finding correct up to date drivers on the internet, which has proved very difficult. I cannot find drivers for my webcam anywhere.

So basically, my battery is unrecognized, my webcam will not work and my usb device drivers seem to be in a mess. If anyone can offer any help with resolving any of these issues, I would be very appreciative as I am stuck on these problems and it is greatly affecting my computers usability.

If there is any other info that would help to solve the problem please let me know and I will add it to this thread as soon as possible. I hope the everest log that is attached was the correct log, if not could someone advise?

Here is a screenshot of the problems in device manager and the sequence of events it takes me through. The windows vista driver updater is a useless piece of trash that has not worked once for any device that I have had trouble with. I do not see the point in it, it seems to do absolutely nothing apart from tell me what windows can not do.

Thanks again in advance for your time and help. I really appreciate it and would be at a loss without people like you.

    Thank you.

What is the exact model number of your Compaq Presario? Is the system 32 or 64bit?

    Hey tgell,

the model is: Compaq Presario CQ70 Notebook PC.

    Running on 32 bit.

Also I was wrong in my original post, I am running "windows vista home basic"
    with service pack 1.

    Thanks. :)

There should be a 3 digit number and possibly a US after the Q70. Do you have that number?

  5. Motoko

    Motoko Private E-2

    It says Version: F.32

    Is that what you mean?

Hello again tgell, the number underneath the laptop is:

    CQ70-211EM

I feel a bit stupid for not checking the bottom of the laptop, I was looking under "system" in the control panel to get the model number before you mentioned it.

Sorry about that mate, and thanks for checking back.

OK, here are the codes for the devices with missing/broken drivers.

    ---------------------------------------------

    USB2.0-CRW

"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

    USB\VID_0BDA&PID_0158&REV_5887
    USB\VID_0BDA&PID_0158

    ---------------------------------------------

    Unknown device
(which I think is the battery)

"This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

    ACPI\PNP0C0A
    *PNP0C0A

    ---------------------------------------------

    HP webcam 101

"No drivers are installed for this device."

    USB\VID_064E&PID_A102&REV_0100&MI_00
    USB\VID_064E&PID_A102&MI_00

    ---------------------------------------------

HL -DT -ST DVDRAM GSA T50L ATA Device

"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

    IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-T50L________________SC05____
    IDE\HL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-T50L________________SC05____
    IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-T50L________________
    HL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-T50L________________SC05____
    GenCdRom

    ---------------------------------------------

All of the above are listed under "Other Devices" in device manager. All display a yellow triangle with an exclamation point, apart from the webcam which has a circle with a question mark next to it.

There is a second webcam driver of the same name (HP Webcam 101) listed under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" it tells me "This device is working properly" any idea why there are two?

The Hardware ID for the apparently working cam driver is different from the one listed under "Other Devices" and is as follows (not sure if relevant):

    USB\VID_064E&PID_A102&REV_0100
    USB\VID_064E&PID_A102

    Cheers. :)

This is the support and download page for your computer. I would suggest the first thing to download and install would be the chipset driver. See how many issues are resolved after it is installed. Remember to create a restore point first.

Is there a particular reason that you do not wish to do a format and reinstall of the operating system if things are not resolved. If you have the recovery partition on your computer you may be able to do a factory restore after backing up your important data.

Thanks for the replies guys, @ tgell: The reason a reformat is not an option is I have no Windows Disk, and no external drive to back anything up (and no money ha).

I have been to the HP site before to try and resolve the problems, I could never get it to work, so thanks Falconattack for telling me I have to use Internet Explorer (I was using Firefox before).

I did a scan on that link and still can not find drivers for my webcam. There are many many people who are having the same problem on the net, I can not find a resolution.

I have searched HP's website for it specifically and no luck, any ideas?
HP Webcam 101 running on youcam software.

I will report back about the other things and if they were fixed.
Thanks very much, I really appreciate it. :)

Yet another problem has cropped up, before installing the chip-set driver I thought I had better make a system restore point in case it messes things up even more.

I got a "system protection" dialogue popup saying:

The restore point could not be created for the following reason:

Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported. (0x8004230C)

    Please try again.

Perhaps I should just throw my laptop out of the window.

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

On the web page for the driver downloads there is firmware for the camera. Not sure if that will solve the problem though.

Click on the globe and in the search box type services. Right click and select Run as Administrator. Then make sure Volume Shadow Copy is Enabled and also Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider is also enabled.

It's too bad you do not have an external drive to back up to. I believe with this computer you may be able to restore it to a factory state without the need for an install disk.

Hey falconattack, I tried the link you posted and it was a program (my pc drivers 4.1) I ran it and clicked "scan now" and it simply says "please wait.. you will see your driver report very soon." Then that dialogue closes and nothing further happens??

The system restore point did work *thanks tgell, now I will update the chipset driver and hopefully this might fix something.

Will report back on my progress.

  18. Motoko

    Motoko Private E-2

Well, I have updated the chipset driver, the webcam firmware and the card reader. I am still in the same position. Nothing has changed.

Just about to do a windows update and see if that can fix anything.
    :cry

At my wits end now, it shouldn't be so impossible to simply find a webcam driver should it?

  19. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

Try this. According to HP, Microsoft has the drivers included in Vista SP2. Delete the drivers for the webcam in Device Manager. Then in an admin account open Device Manager and select Action Scan for Hardware Changes.

    Check this link.

    Pay attention to
Webcam does not work with pre-installed programs

There is no webcam listed in Device Manager

    Motoko Private E-2

I have just finished a windows update, I have no battery still but I care least about this problem it doesn't really matter as this laptop is more of a desktop replacement so forget that.

The things I do need to use are my webcam and my compact flash card reader, I can not get either of them to work.

I need a driver for "ImageMate CF SDDR-91" (vista). Which again seems impossible to find. The thing that is most irritating is this device is meant to be "plug and play" and should not require a driver yet does not show up in my drive list when plugged in :(

However it IS getting power, the light comes on when I plug it in and I get the "Found new hardware" wizard every time. This is driving me insane!!!

Should I upgrade to SP2? Is there any chance of it messing up my system?

    Edit to add;
In device manager, I have no option for "imaging devices". I don't know if there ever was though, is this relevant?

  21. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Sorry,
I got a little confused because your first post said SP2 but in your other post you actually have SP1. Forgot about that. Your Everest Report says Vista Beta but I believe that is because of the software not working well with Vista.

On the Web page listing issues with the webcam it noted.

I would like to try and fix the USB card issue before you try that.

Did you uninstall the Card Reader Driver and try the Realtek driver on the support page? USB2.0-CRW is for the Realtek Card Reader. Is the imagemate driver you are looking for related to the card reader in the computer or is it an external card reader as shown here. Usually the drivers are included in the device.

    http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDDR-91-A15-CF-Type-Reader/dp/B00008ZPHW

These USB issues may be cause by some drivers conflicting. Read the issue here and clean out your old USB mass storage drivers.

    http://www.techspot.com/vb/post875300-1.html

There is a firmware update for the LG GSA-T50L Optical Drive. Are you having problems with the DVD drive? Can you burn with it? I say the yellow exclamation mark next to it in Device Manager.

I would also try downloading and installing the following as shown on the support page if you have never done so.

Operating System - Enhancements and QFEs (‏1)

If none of the above helps then I would go ahead and install Service Pack 2. But first try the above and post the results. Since you are using Service Pack 1 I will continue to look for the camera driver. According to your Vendor and Device ID, it is a Suyin Webcam but so far I have not been able to find a driver with that Device ID in the inf file. I was also looking for a driver called HP Webcam 101. When you did the Windows Update, did it ever suggest any drivers to download?

Hey Tgell, thanks for the helpful replies and sorry I haven't replied sooner.

It was my fault about the SP2 confusion, I thought that was the service pack I had installed and made a mistake in my first post.

Yes I did uninstall the card reader driver and tried the one on the support page which didn't work. I am using an external card reader (the one you linked to) There is no internal reader on this laptop.

I followed the directions in the link you gave me and it seems to have fixed my CD drive not showing up in the drive list. The card reader worked once after running drive cleanup, now it will not work again.

It only seems to work when the driver that vista tries to auto install has been removed. I delete the driver, then restart with the card reader plugged in and it shows up in the drive list. But then when I unplug and reconnect, it just brings up the driver wizard and no longer shows up in the drives panel. I do not understand at all.

    The webcam still gives the same message;

"No video device detected. Please plug a video device into your computer. If you are using an integrated camera please make sure it is switched on."
    ARRGHHHHH.

But at least the CD drive now shows up, that's a start. Next time I'm buying a mac haha.

Could installing SP2 mess up my system? Would my system restore rescue me in this case? (Sorry I'm a bit of a derp with this stuff). :-D

Thanks mate, interested to hear your thoughts on the result. :)

*Edit to add, I did a full windows update and didn't see anything to do with the webcam, so still stuck.

In any case support for Vista SP1 ended in July of this year.

You will no longer get security updates unless you go to SP2. HP also said that you should update to SP2 to solve the camera issue. If the only problem is the Web Cam and the USB card reader, I would install it. There is always the chance things could go wrong but you do not want to be running the computer without the security updates.

Thanks for your help and patience Tgell.

One more thing, I have run windows update a few times over the past couple of days, I can't believe how many updates there are! I am fully up to date as of now though I think. However, I have not been offered SP2 in the automatic updates. Have you any idea why this would be?

I know I can download and install it manually, but that just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen haha. I'm sure I can find instructions online somewhere, but I am just super worried about messing my laptop up even more and ending up back here begging for help again (providing it doesn't take out my connection). :p

Is a manual install something I should do if it doesn't show up in auto updates?

    Cheers bro. :)

You can make sure you are still on SP1 by right clicking computer and selecting properties. It will also tell you if you are 32bit or 64bit. You may have installed SP2 through updates already. Or, you are still be offered updates that pertain to SP1 and will offered SP2 after they are finished.

Yes, you can download the full install. It is over 400MB. Will that be a problem?

Hey, just checked and yep still says SP1 32bit.

Would that include none essential updates also? There are a few optional ones I didn't think I needed, so didn't bother with. Could this possibly be stopping it offering SP2?

No the file size wouldn't be a problem, I have unlimited bandwidth.
I will make sure I have all the updates for SP1 and if it still doesn't work will manually install SP2. Keep your fingers crossed for me haha. :p

Thank you so very much my friend, you have been most helpful.
    Much love.

    Hello again,

    I am back with confusion;

I thought I was up to date with windows update, but still no sign of SP2.
So I checked for updates yet again, it said there was one important update so I downloaded it. After it had successfully installed I decided to check for updates again.. and up pops another "important update".

Every time I check, there seems to be another important update and there seems to be no end to them, shouldn't it just be finding them all at once?

I am actually starting to really HATE microsoft, it's like they go out of their way to make the product nearly unusable. I have decided after reading many horror stories about SP2 to not bother with it until I have backed up my entire hard drive onto an external. I just can't trust microsoft to not screw up my system.

Any idea why the windows update doesn't find all available updates at once?
    INFURIATING. :cry

I am very sorry, I completely lost track of this thread. My apologies.

Sometimes one important update depends on others being installed so it is not that all unusual. Have you kept track of the update numbers and seen if Vista is not trying to install the same update over and over? Sometimes that happens also.

I would highly recommend that you install SP2. If you do not get all of the security updates, your machine can be more easily prone to infection if hackers can make use of a know security hole in Vista.

I think you mentioned you do not have an external drive to do a system image on, correct? How much data do you have on your computer? Is it possible to do a system image over multiple DVD disks?
