I'm fixing to order a new system, and one of the big cost is of course the HD. I know what the SSD drive is and how info is stored, but my question is how much of a difference would a SSD make?. Lets say I got 2 HD's, the primary drive being a 128G SSD, and the secondary is a 500G sata HD. What would I store on the SSD drive? Would I just put the primary system files on the SSD, and install all games and store music and movies on the sata? And what is the life of a SSD? Like how many times could I delete and rewrite different info on a SSD? I obviously wouldn't wanna install games on the SSD because after a few weeks I'd be ready to delete the game and move ooto the next one. Any help would be appreciated. :cool

Faster boots like 12 secs, also install your anti-crap stuff there too. I've heard on-line games do better on SSD's but I'm not a gamer. As far as installing/uninstalling is concerned, I assume you're worried about defragmentation, no worries there as one never needs to defrag them.

As to the life expectancy, they're rated at 1M hours compared to HDD MTBF of 100K hours IIRC.

I've got one but don't use it much, it's on my 2600K Linux machine. Expensive toy in my case.

What i mean by life expectancy... like say I install a 20G game, and then I delete that game a few months later, how many times will I be able to reuse that same 20G? To my understanding you can only delete and rewrite info on a SSD so many times, before the drive becomes corrupted. http://www.storagesearch.com/ssdmyths-endurance.html
Oh and by the way it was a 120G SSD drive not a 128G.
it's just amazing how much these things are. I'm sure the prices will go down, like always. But for a 240G it's like 450 bones. :(

I'm not sure when this article was written but this line says it all.
Most of that article is quite old and the technology has really advanced since then. We need someone more knowledgeable in here.

i have 2 120 gig ssd's in my pc one for the operating system and one for a scratch / rendering drive i also put the virtual memory file to the second drive

the idea is to store the OS and program files on the 1st ssd and all other temp files the program of choice uses to the second ssd
mainly to do with photo's or video
this is more to do with space as 120 gig isn't a lot these days

the speed increase over hdd is quite a lot and worth the investment IMHO but the gap is closing with the new hybrid drives that are appearing which consist of a small ssd and large hdd combined there not as fast as true ssd drives but are considerably faster than native hdd

when i built this pc the thought process was that it's pointless having a quick pc if the hard drive is going to let it down hence using ssd drives ( a pc is only as fast as it's slowest component which tends to be the hdd )

the read write speeds that are quoted with ssd drives tend to be a little enthusiastic but never the less there still quick

Its the difference between night and day,an ssd will be the biggest single noticable performance improvement you can make to your system, everything you put on it will open almost instantly.

Put your OS on it and the games your playing on ATM and even programs you use most,on the storage drive just dump all your large files, video's ect.

Life expectancy isn't a problem anymore really they have no moving parts so do not completely fail like regular HD's but the performance does degrade over time but this is only a few percent in about 5 years depending on usage but even if you hammered it for 10 years it would still have a faster peak transfer speed than a hard drive and the seek time will still be infinitely faster.

The general consensus is you will notice your computer is outdated and performing slow before you notice your SSD is performing slow.

The below statement, is just my humble opinion.

There are differences in the speed of SSDs you buy. Some are actually much slower than others. Also, don't buy the cheap 64GB drives, as you will run out of room fairly quickly. At the minimum, I'd go for 120GB. I personally have two 240 GB SSDs that will be going into my new build, and plan on getting another.

Thanks to everyone for the their info. I think Rikky settled it for me. I think Ill have to go with a SSD despite the cost. I'll let everyone know how it goes.. ;)
