Malware infection (potentially Windows Restore Virus)

    Hello,

    My laptop may have been infected with the Windows Restore Virus. I was doing some searching on Google Images when I was infected. I received a "hard disk error". The screen blinked for a second and when it restored the desktop icons and start menu items disappeared.

    I manually went in and was able to restore some of the start menu items and desktop icons, but many are still missing. I've previously used unhide.exe and rkill.exe to try and restore the items. All attempts have been unsuccessful.

    All scans from MalwareBytes and Super Antispyware come up clean. I'm at a loss.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I have attached the logs per instructions. Final log to follow.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Had you run any kind of disk/drive cleaning programs? If you had, it is possible that you removed any chance of restoring them. Normally Unhide will restore the missing items, but disk cleaners delete the backups that the infections make in temp folders.

    I'm looking through your logs now.

    Your logs are clean. The only issue I see is that you missed updating Sun Java in step 3 of the READ & RUN ME. You need to uninstall the below security risk:

    Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05

    And then undate per step 3 of the READ & RUN ME,


    You could try doing a System Restore to a point before you were infected to see if that helps to restore your missing items. It may or may not help.
