the last line of the "History" section of that WIKI mentions carnivals in passing, but it fails to give the proper emphasis -- "win a kewpie doll" is a common tag line -- in the US at least -- and can be found in use everywhere from politics to porn. try googling.

personally, i've never actually seen one -- it's just an expression!

anyway, back to 10:08, ASUS is the closest, altho it is something far greater than my one watch. and no, it is not Solaris. bigger than that even, i dare say.

    next!

In the days of analogue watches and clocks they were most often set to 10 minutes past 10 (10:10) when being photographed for advertisements. This setting had a symmetry, a smile and 'cupped' the brand name which was usually under the 12.

Now with digital time on watches, clocks and phones the preference for the time in advertisements is often 10:08. HTC does it but as far as I know they haven't offered an explanation as to why.
There are a lot of theories if you want to search for them.

    BINGO!

tho upon further reflection, the "10:10" of yore is actually closer to 10:09 if truly symmetrical. perhaps if the thread title had been "10:08 - the new 10:09", more people would have gotten it. :-D

i never really noticed this with digital watches, but it really jumps out at me in cell/smart/i- phone ads. there is an occasional 10:45 or 10:54, but well over half in those ads are set to 10:08.

one theory mentioned that this illuminates the maximum number of LED/LCD segments, but is this even a factor anymore? aren't those displays pixelated for photos and video nowadays?

(besides which, even back in LED days my cells have always offered 24-hr clocks. so max segments would actually be at 20:08....)

Whatever the reason it will no doubt be some kind of mind frack to make you part with your cash.

They will have flashed different times in front of the extracted the brains of kidnapped Swedish watchmakers and measured the neuron activity in the synapses. Once rounded down to a few 'special' times a 5 year survey will be conducted among the target consumer group subliminally during all the major TV shows and the results inputted into deep Blue while running Sim Mall.

The chosen time will then be temporarily field tested and only finalised upon after increasing sales by 0.01%.

    :-D

Ever since you posted this, I've been paying attention. I honestly have yet to see even one phone advertisement with 10:08 showing. Or 10:10. They seem to be random times on all the PR photos I'm seeing come through my inbox. Weird. :confused

LOL. maybe it is just HTC. i dunno. when i go thru a best buy flyer, it seems like most of them....

personally, i like 10:54 or 12:08 a lot better, for their 4 distinct digits. the double "0" in 10:08 bugs me.

in a similar vein, i'd have preferred 10:05 or 9:23 or 7:18 or something back in the analogue days. LACK of symmetry is more appealing in advertisements, imho. i think it's a generational thing.
