"Mostly" Win7 Progs Crashing

I am 100% "guessing", but I have a hunch Comodo Free Firewall "may" be causing some basic WIN7 (Home Premium) apps (programs) to crash on a regular basis.

I REALLY like (appreciate) the robust protection offered by Comodo, and quantified in a number of reviews. I would LOVE to keep it, as this is laptop (Netbook) which goes on the road with me on occasion.

Would anyone know if this is; 1) "a possibility", and 2) is anyone familiar-enough with Comodo, to instruct me how to allow these (and other) programs through this particular Firewall, please?

    Thanks in advance,
    glenn . . .

    Hey Glenn,
What applications? And why do you suspect Comodo?

You did not respond to Earthling!
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1696049#post1696049

Alternatively, use Revo to uninstall Comodo, reboot and ensure
Win7 firewall is up and running. Do the apps still crash?

I'm behind a router, as are you- If I recall, and don't bother with a third party firewall. A read up for you. Prolly contentious!!

    Hi Glenn

Sikvik's suggestion of uninstalling Comodo to test is a great one and please do this, but also tell us what other security applications you have installed, do name all of them.

You can check Event Viewer and do this as soon as an application crashes (look in Software or System event logs for the crash) then copy and paste the event log into notepad and save and attach to a post, only need one thats an error red ! and only the one from the time of the crash.

Hi Sivik, the apps are (mostly) Paint, and Notepad, though some others have crashed with the same message (e.g. "Crashed"). Not sure of why I suspect Comodo, just a gut-feeling ... I realize that's far from "scientific", but it's the best I got...just a "sense" ... ?

I have now responded to Earthling (meant to previously), though that was a different machine and different OS than I am speaking of in this thread. The Command Prompt did not fix/repair the problem there with the "MyDefrag" prog., so I uninstalled it.

When you say; "Alternatively", do you mean after trying Comodo Uninstaller, or Add/Remove, please?

Well...yes, "most" of the time...but this is a laptop/netbook...I take it out on the road, so need a good 3rd-party program installed...(correct?)

Hi David, nice to see you (back?)... I apologize for the delay in getting-back to you here...I got Sikvik's post answered, but then had to run-out.

This is, as usual, so very frustrating.

I uninstalled Comodo via Add/Remove. The prog seemed to have no Uninstaller (not that I could see anyway), hence, Add/Remove.

I "DO HAVE" Revo, but as per years of dealing with Revo, I have to run its Set-up whenever I wish to make use of it...I suppose that's the "price" of it being free (??), I don't understand that, as I've never seen that with any other program. I was not up-to going-through the whole Revo Set-up process, so I simply availed Add/Remove.

I am now back to utilizing WIN7 Firewall (and not particularly happy about it), but otherwise, the crux of my security on this Netbook is "MSSE", or "MSE" (Microsoft Security Essentials).

    I do have SpywareBlaster.

I do have avast AV and Iobit Malware Fighter "ON" the machine (downloaded/installed), but have not used either of them on this machine.

I will be looking for crashes (they make themselves perfectly known and obvious!), and will go into Event Viewer immediately at the first instance of any crash, and copy/paste per your instructions...

Not sure what else I might be able to do at this point other than to simply "wait" . . . ?

Thanks in advance and as always . . .

Lets see how it goes. :)
Just found this thread. Scroll down. Creating a new user account, solved the issue for AndersWested. We can get to this later. Lets see how Paint and Notepad function for now.

You probably have Revo's set up on desktop. From All Programs, locate Revo, right click and send to desktop as a short cut.

Why do you have Avast if you are using MSE? By "not used", do you mean completely disabled or not used for a drive scan?

  8. grc123

    grc123 MajorGeek

"Was" going to (had planned to) utilize avast (as I have used it rather successfully for quite some years now on other machines), but decided I would rather not do that at this time, so it was downloaded/installed, but is disabled (and stopped from Startup) - same with IMF.

I would also question the wisdom of using Iobit alondside MSE, as it is yet another realtime antimalware process. I stick to only having one realtime av-type program installed on any one comp, normally MSE but Avast on the main Win 7 system, and just manually scan periodically with other on-demand scanners, such as the free versions of MBAM and/or SAS. It's asking for trouble using more than one realtime AV.

EDIT - cross posted there, so hadn't seen that they are disabled.

EDIT2 - I'm with Sikvik on firewalls and haven't used one in years - just rely on the router.

What about when I go on the road with the machine? The router doesn't exactly make the trip...?

Win 7 firewall will provide incoming protection.Which I feel is more important than outgoing. Comodo of course provides both ways.
Lets stick with the matter on hand and see if Paint and Notepad issues get fixed. As to why Comodo could have done this, I have no idea and doubt it.

    Cheers..

Is this from Notepad? Or Chrome, which I see running. JScript errors are beyond me. Read some where, disabling and re-enabling Javascript for Chrome may resolve some issues. I don't use chrome and can't vouch for the info. If you like- disable and then re-enable.
    http://www.chromefans.org/chrome-tu...pt-nojavascript-noscript-in-google-chrome.htm

Chrome apparently has an extension for this. Use at your own risk. :-D

How are Notepad and Paint functioning? Lets keep the eye on the ball.

No crashes on Notepad or Paint...not yet anyway, and yes, I "think" that Syntax thing was indeed Chrome-related (will deal with that separately from this thread).

Well as usual, things are going from bad to worse...yet another nightmare in geekville for glenn.

The machine began freezing-up...I finally got Task Mgr opened, and sure enough avast was there - "running" - "somewhat" ... to some extent (4000-5000 KB's worth).

I went to the desktop, where I saved a shortcut to Revo, but still I had to set-it-up (run Set-up, as always??). It was not the usual Revo process...it found avast's uninstaller, opened it, so I ran it, but it never went back to the Revo uninstaller/program/app...just used avast's uninstall, and that was it.

So then I also found Comodo "Dragon" in Revo (maybe that'a the Comodo Browser?) and when I tried to uninstall it, well, it gave me emboldened results such as "Macromedia Flashplayer" (screen-shot attached) Now I don't know what TO DO??

Also now, I am also seeing something in Task Mgr called "COMO"...??? (after, mind you, I removed BOTH of these via WIN7 Add/Remove last night...or so I THOUGHT??)

Now that I'm using Windows Firewall, can you tell me if this is the correct settings please? I read that it's better ("safer") to have "Public Network" selected (checked/activated) no matter where I was...?

LASTLY - Paint JUST crashed...I just got the "Paint has stopped working" error message...?

    My God - what a mess... :(

Hi, I don't want to add anything that might confuse the situation but I just want to add some advice about posting screenshots of task manager that will help you and everyone .
When you open Task Manager, if you left click and hold on the line that separates the columns then you can drag the column to make it bigger so you can read all the text.
I have clicked on the column title Image Name to sort the items A > Z, you should be able to click on the column title Description
By the way, I have XP so I don't have the Description column.

See the images below for Before and After shots, you will see red arrows pointing to the column separators and the hilighted Image Name.

Yes it was running!! Just checked an Avast 6 machine and the two processes listed in TM used the approx same memory.
Run the Avast uninstall utility to cleanup.
    http://majorgeeks.com/Avast_Uninstall_Utility__d5528.html
    That's Dragon's flash plugin.
Download fresh and install Revo again. Use it for Dragon and check the bold entries only.
As MadMal, mentioned to expand the columns. The process CLPLS.exe relates to Comodo's live support.

See what you can find in Event Viewer, as David has already advised.

    Grab appremover http://www.appremover.com/
This is specifically for removing security programs.
When you run it, it will find ALL the security programs on the computer.
Having too many security programs is almost worse than not having any. That's why you have freezing and crashing.
On windows 7 the firewall is fine (yes it works at hotspots because I take my Win 7 netbook on the road). Get rid of Comodo

Thank you all...I think most of you know I am appreciative, and some may know I try to "not" bother anyone with "my" trouble(s), but I do get myself into trouble, and then "sometimes" I can fix/repair that trouble, and sometimes yes, I am not able to repair things alone ... and then sometimes end-up making things even worse.

I will need this evening (a few hours) to sort through the help given here, and get things back to a healthy state...

    Thank you all very much . . . . . .

Thank you...I am actually aware/familiar with, I simply tend to forget in the heat of the moment some times...to be perfectly Honest, it is at THOSE times...at times such as that these days, that I actually find myself inadvertentnly feeling-around for my pistol ... 9mm, not video game :(

DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was "GOING TO" attach a screenshot showing the expanded Task Manager Window - BUT NOW CANNOT EVEN "FIND" THE SCREENSHOT I "JUST" TOOK?????????????????????????????

I cannot believe how fast, and how far, things TUMBLE, when they begin going bad in my tech-experiences...?>?

I was TRYING to get things straightened-out here, when up pops a window for an "AMD Update" (my CPU mfg) - which likely ocurred as I just re-enabled something in my startups named "Asus EEE Docking" ... so, in any event, I selected the update (which I thought "couldn't hurt" - right?

But no. NOW I have THIS (screenshot #2) which I cannot get to an "OK" button, so as to MOVE IT THE HELL ALONG AND THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!!!???!!!

    I've changed the resolution/etc./etc.

Why ON EARTH do these software developers make these windows ("interface screens??) with such HUGE "BLANK__________________AREAS" in them, so that the "OK/Cancel/etc" buttons are so inaccessible, without a whole bunch of damned wrangling????? I mean SERIOUSLY - just LOOK at all the DEAD (BLANK) space on that thing!!!???!!!

PS - included in the screen-shots is the Task Mgr, shot that I couldn't "FIND" in my most recent posting.

Not "exactly" sure what you mean here by; "use it for Dragon"..? And is there another way to set-up Revo, so it works like EVERY other program I've EVER used, and so that I only have to install it ONCE, not every time I wish to avail it, please?

Yes, this is where I read it!! ("Note: If you know you won’t need to share files or printers, the safest choice is public network."), however, what I am not sure about is: may I and/or SHOULD I have BOTH boxes checked (selected), "Private" (Home) AND "Public"?

Now, THIS is very confusing...it's all so compacted/compressed/JAMMED-together, so I will post the gist of the report(s), and include a screen-shot - as I am SHOCKED at ALL the "warnings & errors" that I have, yet never knew about!!!???!!!

    Type/ Last Hour - 24hrs - 7 Days

I meant, to use Revo to uninstall Comodo dragon. If you've already uninstalled Comodo Dragon then fine. I feel there is some curruption in your Revo. I just reinstalled and the installer puts a icon on the desk top automatically. If you see Revo in add/remove uninstall it, else delete the folder or installer where you are currently launching it from. And download and install Revo again.

No your settings are fine. What I linked to was when your machine detects a new wireless connection you have connected to it will ask whether you want to set it as a public or home network. If using a hotspot- select public.

Click custom views and the double click Administrative Events. Then Look for the errors around the time paint crashed as David mentioned. To be honest I find Event viewer errors difficult to interpret. I'll try my best and may be some one else will chip in.

    Cheers..

Thanks...I'll be chipping-away at all of this...frankly, I'm having some difficulty understanding "exactly" how to proceed with the prog plodr linked me to - http://www.appremover.com/ .

Some folks are fine, good (even GREAT perhaps!?!) at assuming how to use these tools, etc. I am "not" one of those folks.

If I have a question (or three/six/12), I "must" stop on the spot...and ask asap before proceeding. As for now, I am needing to get sleep...long day tomorrow (TODAY!), and it's 4am (omGOSH!!! YIKES!!!).

    G'night - see ya back here asa"possible".

Paint and Notepad have both since crashed, though oddly (of course!?!) not as frequently, it seems.

Each time, I have simply forgotten to look to the Event Viewer (looking into that is not something I am accustomed to doing on any sort of a regular - "normal" - basis).

Am attempting to have ("MAKE"..."Force"??) one (or both) of those two to quit (crash) now . . .

    Hi Glenn

Do look in Event Viewer for any red X's at the time of the crash as this may give us some clues as to whats happening.

If you have simple apps as in Notepad and Paint crash then you have a possibly serious issue and while this could be other software causing the issue it may not be, so to try and rule it out its best to maybe follow the below.

    1. boot into safe mode and choose safe mode with networking as you get internet that way, then use your PC, does it crash? if not then its an app or driver causing the issue.

    2. To see whats causing this click start and in the start search box type msconfig and hit enter, then click the startup tab and untick everything and reboot, does your PC crash now?

If not then enable the top entry and reboot and test your PC, does it crash? if not enable the next one and test and so on until you find you have a crash and please name the entry it crashed on.

    3. I suspect that this is a random issue and likely the best option sadly is a re-install of Windows and try not to add too much in the way of security apps and DO NOT tweak the system with weirdass tweaks that are all over the internet.
