I have an Asus A4000K laptop which suddenly will no longer post. Pressing the power button does nothing, but it automatically switches itself on when you open the laptop while the power is plugged in.

Perhaps it is stuck in hibination mode, which is why the power button does not make it wake up but opening the lid does?

I tried cleaning and testing the ram by trying different combinations. I also tried a hard reset by taking out the battery and holding the power button down for a minute, then replacing the battery but still it is the same. I dont even know if that will reset the cmos or if there is a way to do that.

I have a recovery DVD (I dont think the A4K has a recovery partician) but I cant even reach the bios.

A quick thing to try if you haven't already would be to try to boot with AC power but no battery.

So remove AC and battery hold power for a minute. Connect to AC and see if it POSTS.

Thanks sach2 but I have tried that already.

I just dont understand why it will only power on when the case is opened :confused

I've looked around and can't find any similar threads for your particular model. So it doesn't seem like it is a model specific problem. A couple of things you might look at:
Do you have any lights on the keyboard when you lift the lid?

Any sounds like it is trying to access the CDROM or HD when starting?

If you start with no RAM installed do you hear a beep?

Are you certain that you are fully seating the RAM modules?--they can be tricky on a laptop.

I couldn't find a disassembly guide for your model but no AC, no battery and holding the power button for a minute should be equivalent to removing the cmos battery and therefore clear CMOS.

I doubt this will work but when the computer is on press the Fn+F1 button.

According to the support page it is a suspend switch.

    No

    No

No. I dont even get to the BIOS

I have tried swapping the RAM many times so I thinks its unlikely

I tried both a hard reset and unplugging the CMOS battery.

I just dont understand why it will only power on when the case is opened :cry
