Internet drivers crashing my comp?

    My computer (XP sp3, mother board MSI K9A2GM v3) will boot fine, but the moment I try to open a web browser it crashes. It won't do this in safe mode. (It will open and work fine as long as I load safemode with networking.) Not entirely sure what driver is causing it. I've tried to update my drivers on everything, but of course, the moment I connect to the internet it crashes. :-\

    I wrote down a long list (about 94-100) drivers that were running in normal mode, and tried to compare it to what was running in safe mode. I'm completely lost.

    Help?

    Do you have any crash dumps in the Windows\Minidump directory? If so, zip say the last 6 dumps (whatever will compress to less than 2 MB) and attach to your next post.

    Ok, now it is loading to the desktop and crashing three seconds later. I managed to get it to open in safe mode and I got the following errors from the System event viewer.

    Type, Source, Event
    Error, DCOM, 10005 (says from trying to open in safe mode)
    Error, Service Control Manager, 7001
    Error, Service Control Manager, 7026

    I looked at the details of 7026:
    The following boot-start or system-start drivers failed to load:
    AFD
    Fips
    Ipsec
    MRxSmb
    NetBios
    NetBT
    Processor
    RasAcd
    Rdbss
    Tcpip

    I just realized that's not what you're looking for. I've looked all over my computer and can't find the dump file. I've never gotten a BSOD. I've tried turning off "automatic restart" in the boot options, but still, the machine just restarts every time I open internet explorer in normal mode.

    For troubleshooting this, go to Start > Run and type in msconfig then press OK.
    Select the Services tab and put a check in 'Hide all Microsoft services', then disable the remaining services. Then disable everything in the Startup tab.
    Reboot the computer. If you don't get any crash, then go back to msconfig and re-enable one of the disabled entries, then reboot. Continue until you find the problematic entry.

    Had you installed or updated anything on the PC that coincides with the start of the problems?

    Ok, problem, when I "hide all microsoft services" everything disappears. There are no other services. The only thing in startup is:
    Startup item, Command, Location
    ctfmon, C:\Windows\system32\ctfmon.exe , software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

    Despite unchecking that, the computer still restarts.

    • Boot into safe mode with networking.
    • Download the latest version of Autoruns and extract the content of the zip file to its own directory.
    • Run Autoruns.exe and hit the Esc key as it starts.
    • Go to Options > Filter Options and put a check in 'Verify code signatures', uncheck the other options.
    • Press F5 to refresh and when it has completed go to File > Save and save the log to somewhere convenient.
    • Zip the log and attach to your next post.
    Also, do you have an XP SP3 installation disk?
    As msconfig only showed ctfmon.exe, does this mean that you have no real time protection running on your PC?

    There ya go. :) And yeah, I have no real time protection on the computer. It's a fresh install of XP on a brand new hard drive. And yeah, I have the installation disk.

    I'm thinking that the problem drivers could well be the Marvell Aux NV Bridge drivers
    * mv61xxmm.sys
    * mv64xxmm.sys
    * mvxxmm.sys

    Using Autoruns go to the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services entries and uncheck (don't delete) the above three entries.
    Now see if you can boot into regular mode.

    If you can install Everest Free Edition, get a report from this and attach to your next post.

    If your NIC is identified as a Realtec then here's a download link for the Realtec Lan drivers for your motherboard.

    Edit: Download Everest and the Realtec drivers prior to editing anything in Autoruns.

    It boots in normal mode just fine, but still crashes the moment IE tries to ping a website....which just gave me an idea. I tried to run ipconfig in the cmd and the cmd window instantly closes. I can't even get it to stay open to manually ping 8.8.8.8 (google dns). Not sure if that's relevant. Attached is the requested report I did before installing everything else and unchecking (not deleting) those drivers.

    Do you mean you tried to run ipconfig from the command prompt?

    If your Installation disk is XP SP3, I'd try running the system file checker.
    Run SFC /PURGECACHE then SFC /SCANNOW

    If there's still problems, download the System drivers and Ethernet drivers from MSI.
    Then go into the Device Manager and uninstall all Realtek Network drivers (right click, uninstall), reboot, then install the downloaded drivers.

    Sorry for the slow reply. Still having issues with this. I followed your instructions, still no luck. I found something interesting though. I opened up CMD and pinged 8.8.8.8 (google dns) and I got a response, so the comp is connected to the internet in normal mode just fine, but whenever I open IE it still crashes. I'm trying to install another browser on it, but I'm having difficulty with that too.

    Yeah, I ran that and the machine still crashed. I tried booting off of another hard drive and it also crashed. Going to go check out that website you recommended now.
