So, we're finally in a position to where we could pay the $225 setup fee for bluebird wireless.

    http://www.bluebirdwireless.com/Services/Residential_Wireless.aspx

    (East Texas)

But my question is would we be better off than Hughesnet ?

Hughesnet has got to where it'll get slow as for about 5 hours a day (3pm-8pm) and then it'll pick up to 98 KB/sec and then finally see the speed we pay for at 3am-8AM .

It's got a cap of 475 MBs per 24 hours with only 1-6 AM open.

Bluebird would have no download cap/fap but people are saying it's max speeds are from 76-98 where they live according to them.

I'm not sure I'd be much better off ? What do y'all think ? I think the stupid Hughesnet cap when I have something large to download (like the Left4Dead2 update 2 days ago.. ) is crap and puts a fear on us like "OMG, is there gonna be an update to windows, etc today during the hours it counts to send us over our limit!!" is stupid. And maybe the other one would have a lower latency than hughesnet to where maybe I could look in to playing multiplayer sides of games ?

    "Ping statistics for 74.125.115.103:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 704ms, Maximum = 996ms, Average = 829ms"

But then again, the $225 setup fee is steep... Not to say that the current Hughesnet $80 a month isn't steep and a total rip off.

Most of this is basic internet provider info, lets see if I can help.

Obviously in this case you need to consider your bandwidth requirements. Large games and streaming movies will kill you. If both are satellite, you can forgot live online gaming against others because it is well known that the satellite signal must go to the satellite, then back typically adding a half second minimum ping to ANY satellite connection. While this won't affect almost anything you do, it WILL be a real pain playing games.
When recently looking to move I had to rule out rural areas with satellite due to low speeds, high pings, clouds and so many other problems to deal with.

Also with most cable lines, you share with the neighborhood so slow downs from 5-9 PM or so are very common.

I recently went FIOS and love it, you have none of those issues but fiber optic internet is only available in some areas. Bottom line: Any sort of cabled internet will always be better than satellite.

    I hope I helped.

Well the land based version doesn't have a Fair Access Policy (FAP) and they say since they are land based they have a much lower latency than sat. Also there is the "unwritten" problems with hughesnet: gmail takes about 5 reloads to get it to work right, some days the messengers and steam are down 8-10 hours and you call them and they claim "if you can browse the internet, use the web based versions of the messenger programs your internet is fine". Yet the next day they'll go in and out the same time.

It took me about 12 days to download Arkham City after the steam sale at the end of the year . (Almost 15 GBs). 4 days for Sonic Generations (almost 5 GBs) , 4-6 for Fallout3: GOTY. (about the same as sonic, but I did other downloads between 1-6 AM some days).

    People hate Hughesnet.

But I can't find anyone saying anything about bluebird.

No listing for bluebird, just WildBlue.

Correct which is just in tern a Ka band instead of Ku band sat company that has caps/FAPs of monthly proportions with no unlimited hours counting towards it claiming their latency is less being on the Ka band.

So another words, not for me at all.
