    Hi there

    About a week and a half ago, I visited a website for work which caused popups to appear from quite a few pages on the site. I just closed these as they came up, didn't think much of it at the time. The site was also broken, so I opened it in 3 different browsers to see if it worked.

    On the same day, my computer urged me that I needed a java update, which I carried out. (Don't know if this is related, the problem site was open at the time).

    The next morning, I found that the home page on all 3 browsers (Firefox, Chrome and IE) had reset themselves to one of the popups that had been thrown up by the website - the home page is now ver-filmes.com. No matter how many times I switch it back, it persists in resetting itself back. I have since blocked the site in my windows hosts file, however the browsers still try to access the url.

    The day after all the popups, AVG found 6 or 8 theats and moved them to the vault. And 3 more the next day. I ran a full scan, which found some things and removed them. I also ran a Spybot scan, which also removed some things.

    On the 5th or 6th working day after the popups, I woke my machine from hibernation to find a whole taskbar of alert popups like the one attached (alert.png). When I click cancel, an error popup appears like the image attached (alert.png). These popups have continued to occur for the past 3 days. The application exe in the alert varies every now and again (in the screenshot, it is DotNetInstaller), and the location of the error file that it cannot open also varies, but is always in the profiles folder of Firefox or Chrome (I usually have these two browsers open, not IE).

    I ran C-Cleaner, and a trial of a program called Hitman Pro (upon advice from a colleage), which both found things to clean up. I then uninstalled hitman pro as it caused an error message on startup.

    Then I followed instructions on this website. I have attached logs for the programs which I ran from this site's instructions. (some will be in a reply as I've reached maximum attachments)

    The problem still persists. The popups are particularly annoying as they occur about every 5-10 minutes - and I use this computer all day, every weekday.

    My computer is a 64bit Windows 7 machine.

    Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks
    Liz

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    ClearJavaCache::
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\ProgramData\xeuQv3ir8QwnCSV\ZkhEhzuq5l4p6.exe
    C:\ProgramData\nXcbjsNYEQL7o\J31e2EwSP.exe
    C:\ProgramData\c4KQguCAr\IyQA5gNqbZGwW.exe

    Folder::
    c:\programdata\xeuQv3ir8QwnCSV
    c:\programdata\TpocDbxto4hZWj
    c:\programdata\9tjFaN51FS
    c:\programdata\nXcbjsNYEQL7o
    c:\programdata\UlrqjlW

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Note: If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    PS: You don't have to worry about your user name. It will not be any kind of security issue. :)

    Hello, Thank you for your thorough response :)

    I have carried out the steps you mentioned.

    On the first step, with HyjackThis, the entry beginning O4 - HKCU... was a different of random letters and numbers, I've attached a screenshot (O4.png). I fixed this entry.

    The REGEDIT4 part worked fine, as did Combofix.

    I have attached the log files again. I've changed my username in them again, because it is my full name which I'm careful with on the internet.

    I will let you know how it goes with my computer. No alert popups so far today though!

    Thanks,

    Liz :)

    Good to know.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
