I was wondering whats a good replacement for Spyware Terminator. Several months ago I upgraded to a much more powerful PC I had Spyware Terminator 2.8 on my old PC and it worked flawlessly I upgraded to this Windows 7 machine and installed ST 3.0 and have had nothing but headaches since. Now, I am preparing to uninstall 3.0 to see if 2.x works better for me but I was curious what is a good replacement for ST.

The problem in question is ST's realtime shiled will complain about a access violation at 73B41210. It is always the same address and the error doesn't have any obvious affect on ST's ability to run but it is very annoying and nerve wracking especially when I'm playing EVE Online or something similar and it forcefully minimizes the window with a loud BEEP!

Out of curiosity is there anyway to find out what is at address 73B41210?

    Hi

What version of ST are you using as the latest version should be fine and its HERE

So uninstall the version you have now and install the version listed above, also what other security applications do you have installed (please list) as one may cause an issue in compatibility with another app.

anything mentioning address is likely to be a memory address issue as it cannot write to a particular block in ram.

Other real time shields I would tend to use is Microsoft Security Essentials but not with any other real time security app.

I agree with you Hrlow, however Spywareblaster is passive and not active, personally I install a good AV as in Avast or MSE and Spywareblaster and maybe Malwarebytes as a secondary on demand scan and thats all.

Try David's update solution and see if that works for you.

If not or if you would like to try another Free solution, look at IObit Malware Fighter.
It does provide Real Time protection.
There is a good product overview video by Major Attitude on the MG download page.

Also, look at the AntiSpyware Tools section at How to Protect yourself from malware!

I use Spybot, Super-Anti-Spyware, and Malwarebytes. Spybot new beta has real time but I don't trust it. Other then that I use the free versions for on-demand scanning and use AVG Internet Security which is FREE!

Hopefully you find what I use useful. Over the past month have had one intrusion that was undetected until after it slipped through real-time protection. Combo of Super-Anti-Spyware and Malwarebytes where the ones to remove, removed Microsoft Security Essentials since it couldn't even detect. Since then using AVG.

I vote for Malwarebytes as well. (Five ***** Stars for Malwarebytes!) available here at MajorGeeks

I have used the Malwarebytes "Pro version" very successfully (but the freeware version is also good). It works really wonderfully and has served me well for a while now. I actually test freeware programs as a hobby on the side; and I probably download and install around a dozen or so of new full applications and/or utility programs to test out each month so I have to be careful. Previously I tried using superAntispywarePro however it did not pickup all the spyware that the Malwarebytes freeware version found the first time tested it. And after I upgraded to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware pro; it has consequently already caught about a dozen or so 'baddies' while I was trying to test the new freeware programs onto my computer as well as warning me while I was downloading some of the installation .exe files for the new programs. Another nice thing it that it detects many seemingly innocuous adware programs that many other anti-malware programs do not. It then lists them and offers a 'right-click' link option which leads to a more thorough explanation of what they are, what they do as well as describing how dangerous (or docile) they are and then offers the option to remove them or not to.

For a while there I used to use Spybot S & D freeware as well as the "paid version" of Spyware Terminator.

I actually no longer recommend the Spybot - Search & Destroy. Although it is offered as freeware, has been in the around for a long time, was reliable in the very beginning (I think I first installed it around 2000-01; when it first came out) and it in fact offered very innovative features - however I'm sorry to say, as time went on all of the various assorted bugs and numerous false positives make it very difficult to recommend at the present time. The most current version actually offers very meager protection with regards to spyware detection/removal IMO. But the worst part about it is that the program's 'real-time protection' interferes with spyware detection and removal by other antimalware and anti-virus programs (especially Norton) which are also running concurrently and the sad reality is that Spybot S & D actually rarely identifies any malware and does almost nothing to prevent malware install on a clean system in the first place. Another bad thing about using it is that he program has the tendency to lock up at times (especially during the original installation process). And even when it doesn't lock up on you, it seems to take forever to run a full scan afterwards and I also tons of trouble running any other programs while Spybot was running at the same time.

I have no major complaints to report about using the Spyware Terminator program; which seemed to me to be a satisfactory to above average program to run as far as protection goes - particularly if you are running and older model computer with far less memory then the newer models. But it also depends on what other protection you have running for protection on the computer and also especially regarding what your hardware specs are. I used it for a while (on my old Win XP computer) and Spyware Terminator was a sufficient program as far as scanning and removal of malware goes; however I definitely would not recommend installing it unless you have sufficient memory to run and use the real-time scanner. Even with the real-time scan turned off, the program is a burden to the on the CPU usage and also uses a HUGE amount of RAM. Consequently, my recommendation would be that if you are running an older 'pre-XP' model computer and only are looking for an on demand scanner, and you do not have adequate RAM on your computer - you might want to look elsewhere.

About the only thing other somewhat negative I can think of about Spyware Terminator would be that the program is actually what I would call "Rent-ware" because the subscription for Spyware Terminator cost me like 40 dollars PER YEAR -so you're not buying the software - you are actually leasing it! (Way too much for what it offers IMO). As for the Malwarebytes "Pro version" I believe it ran me around 25 dollars (US) but it was well worth it.

Although I'm always looking for freeware alternatives to shareware programs; in this case I didn't really mind ponying up for the Malwarebytes "Pro version" version, in order to support the programs development and updates. One of the great things about it is that it updates every single day, runs quietly in the background and it thus far has not interfered with any of my other anti-malware/antivirus/firewall programs; but by far, the best thing about it is that you only have to pay for it ONCE and it is yours to KEEP! (and the updates and support offered are 'perpetual' which is always a good thing).

As for the Malwarebytes "Pro version" I believe it ran me around 25 dollars (US) but it was well worth it.

Important Side Note: If you decide to try it out I would strongly suggest reading the helpful installation and program use step-by-step post listed at the following link:

I am currently using ST 2.8.3.283, but when I was having trouble with the Access violation problem I was using ST 3.0.0.50 I think? It was a very up to date version at the time. I am using Avast Antivirus, and Outpost Security Suite (since they seemed to have discontinued the free firewall standalone version).
