USB showing when I don't have one plugged in?

    Hi There,

I've had a problem recently where there is a USB displayed in the bottom even though there isn't one plugged in.

    How do I investigate this?

Is there a way to filter off inactive USBs in the Device Manager to isolate what the pc thinks this is?

I have a feeling that this might be connected with the use of some malicious software.

    Hi

To start with What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

Have you installed any new hardware of late and if so what as some HDDs do for some reason list as USB.

If you believe malware then have you run the guide below

as an all clear from the malware experts here will rule out malware and we can continue with an software or hardware issue.

Do you have an internal card reader in the computer?
Have you installed a new printer recently? (with a slot for a camera card)
Both those things can show a permanent USB device in the tray.

    Windows 7. I haven't got service pack 1 yet. Should I?

I will hopefully have time to do the Malware checks shortly.

I haven't installed a new printer recently, but I have been installing various small pieces of software. usually light audio software of different types. I can't tie this problem arising in with that in my mind, but i can't rule it out....

Right now Deview is showing 4 active Usb connections; but I don't have an icon displayed just now.

I forgot about the ports at the back as I tend to use the front. But I have the Mouse, Keyb, Printer and Cam plugged in the rear usbs.

Deview is displaying these as active:

    Logitech Cam unknown
    Usb Composite Device unknown
Usb Input Device HID (human interface device)
    and
Multiple Card Reader USB Device Mass Storage

There are many inactive devices listed. Many I recognize, many I don't.

But I guess the tell might be when I run Deview as the problem arises......

    Thanks all

    |I just ran Usb Deview when I was having the same problem and it is not displaying any additional connection as being active. Are any of you aware of malicious pieces of software which allow remote viewing and might be connected with this?

I've been noticing a few different strange occurrences, like my whole explorer screen refreshing or crashing sometimes....or my e-mail account behaving as if it is refreshing every 2 seconds on the tab title....

If you suspect malware, the links you need are in Post #2.

No i don't. I suspect malicious misuse of my PC and IP address by a party located elsewhere. I logged on to Amazon earlier on and it told me I had viewed an item which I had not. So the offending party can make it look like this activity came from my PC. I am not sure how.....

It could be a RAT ...
