I dropped Norton and installed MSE. I ran a scan with MSE and with the green progress bar at 1/5, after 4 hours, 826,000 files were scanned. I cancelled the scan.

Instead of Norton's suite I used MSE, Z/A, Malwarebytes + a router. Malware bytes was fine.

What is my problem with such a lengthy scan that I had to cancel with MSE??

    Thank you for any advice.

I ran the tool per directions from Norton prior to installing MSE.

Thank you very much. I was told to exclude MS security client and antimalware.
    I'll give all a try.

There are a ton of hits on Google for this issue. Some mention that subsequent (full) scans were quicker. Still People are not satisfied. If I recall Tim, (MA) Co-owner of this site faced similar issues. Got a new LT and using MSE, I've not run a full scan in three months. (Quick scan every week.) Will give it a shot. It is using more resources (RAM) as opposed to Avast v6 in Task Manager, from what I have noticed.

Does not make a difference to me, either ways.
Edit to add: Got nothing to do with a switch from Norton or an other AV.

    Cheers..

    Full scans run:
    1. XP Home eMachine 492,035 files took 1 hour and 5 minutes
    2. Win 7 Home Prem. Acer netbook 372,694 files took 1 hour and 11 minutes
    3. XP Pro ASUS 127,192 files took 47 minutes

I have one more computer to test.

Peter, I've thought about why your scan might take so long. I remember you are meticulous about making Images using Acronis. Do you store those images on the hard drive you are scanning? If you do, you do not want to do a Full scan until you excluse some things. Your scan will scan the entire computer, and it will also scan all your images which would be the same as scanning the entire computer 2, 3 or more times!

Click Settings and then either "Excluded Files and Locations" or "Excluded File Types" and put .tib in as something to not get scanned.

Last computer scanned. I waited for this because I knew it had the most files.
XP Home Dell 588,104 files took 1 hour and 38 minutes

After removing Norton's Security Suite 2010 I found a folder in C:/users/public/public downloads.

It contains a string of digits which I have in the attachment. There are two of them one ends in v4 and the other in v5.
When you open either you find information like download manager, system information etc
Can I delete these folders safely?
    Thank you

The Public Folder contains no files until someone adds those.

Mine are empty so not knowing what exactly is in "public downloads", I won't say whether you may safely delete them.

If you removed Nortons then you dont need any Norton folders. Try IOBit Uninstaller to help you next time :)

The correct answer to your question is because it is one of the slowest scanners on the market. That's it.

I reinstalled MSE and it scans my 1T hard drive as fast as any program I have used. Also, the other machine.
I am happy with it. I appreciate the referal for removal tools and will look at it.

Plodr -I renamed the folder and if no trouble in a week will remove it.

    Thanx all

I can get you the benchmarks if you like, but what do I know?

    I meant no disrespect.
I just hurriedly put that out b/c from my limited users ability the scan does seem as fast as the others. I am sure, if measured, it will be one of the slower ones.
Ask David P. how peaceful this little 'ole man is! :wave

Btw, thanx for the IOBIT referral as it has a lot of features. I have to be careful with it, however.
