Help!! My computer was infected with Trojan:DOS/Alureon.H
    Items: boot:\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0\(MBR)

I removed the virus with MS Security Essentials offline tool -- now the system won't reboot. It keeps coming back to computer repair, and then "can't repair the problem". It claims that this error is due to a change in system configuration. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite running Win 7 Prem 64-bit, 2.0Gig RAM.

This is not my computer...I do not have a recovery disk, and I really don't wish to use the Toshiba Recovery and return it to factory specs. Is there another way around this, or do we lose the data on the HDD?

    All suggestions appreciated.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Do you have a link to exactly which tool you are referring to?

    Try the below.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in the below commands. The last one will reboot.
      • bootrec /fixmbr
      • bootrec /fixboot
      • exit
    Did the above help?

Here is the link .... http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline.

It provided the file(s) MSE WDO-64 for download (in an executable, that needed to be unpacked (mssstool64.exe).

I created the DVD as instructed, and booted up with it. Windows Defender came up and scanned the HD. Once finished, it identified the trojan and gave me the option to remove it. I received a 'removal successful' message and tried to reboot. That's when it wouldn't reboot and suggested I run system repair. After completing the repair attempt, a dialog box appeared that said it could not be done and to send info to microsoft. I reinserted the DVD, it booted to offline program...scanned, and could not find any virus. Same reboot problem.

I followed the instructions you gave (prior to reading this reply) and came up with the screen you said, with one exception: my last line item was not 'command prompt'. It was replaced with 'Toshiba Recovery System'.

Needless to say, my only option was to return the laptop to factory specs. Fortunately, the system was returned to its original state without any glitches, and my friend (thank goodness) was ok with that -- no vital data lost.

After returning the laptop to its original state, I downloaded and scanned with Norman Malware Cleaner, and then installed and scanned with AvastFree AV. Both came up negative. I then created a system repair (recovery) disk, and returned all to its owner.

Thank you for your prompt reply, and I will post to this forum with future problems and/or questions.

    John
