Hi, I am new here with an old story.

My wifes computer was acting up. Since that is my job (she has little patience with this stuff even though she is a programmer err... software anylyst) I started to it.

Symptoms: AVG says it is out of date.
When booting into XP, it hangs half way through setting icons on desktop from placeholders to specific icons. She thinks after windows update.

So, I check antivirus. It is running and up to date. It is Ad Aware I think Suite. Do not think it was a knockoff.(checked with spywarewarrior rogue_antispyware.htm)
Look for AVG and decide to remove it from add or remove programs.
Notice ad aware has never done a scan. Did a complete scan. Scan found a "virus" and removed it. I was foolish enough to not write it down, something like dkls39t.
Well it had numbers and letters.

Looked up ad aware and noticed that ownership had changed. Suspiciously. So I put MSE on the machine and removed ad aware. Updated Chrome (she still uses IE despite
My looks of horror). Noticed that search went to goon search. Tryed to erase it.

At this point I decided that there must be an active malware of some sort and found Major Geeks. Started at the Read & Run Me First, Malware Removal Guide.
Then the XP removal cleaning procedure.

when runnig combofix, it stalled after stating that it was deleting folders. It deleted a number of files namely ProgramFiles\chrome\file2linkib\...
Then deleted Folders appdate\temp, karen\windows, progfiles\explorer, progfiles\explorer, progfiles\file2linkib, system32\cache. Then it hung. Let it go for 2 days.
Then ran the rest of the files.

I am now thinking that for challenged people like me, you might change the instructions for combofix to read: If you are running AVG anti-virus or have ever ran...
since I did not run the AVG removal tool. So maybe that is why combofix stalled.

    I have attached the logs.

Am I good? Is it time to run the AVG removal tool and then rerun combofix?

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Bruce

Digging further noticed that in add/delete programs there is:

    Alot toolbar
    File2LinkIb
    InstallBrain Updater Service

we don't recognize them. and are suspicious.

Also, $AVG8.Vault$ is the first folder on c drive.

Uninstall them and tell me what issues remain, as I am not finding any malware in your logs.

I have uninstalled them. I am not seeing any issues. Time to uninstall ComboFIx?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
