Have the websites provided them with it? I would think they wouldn't unless somehow forced to.

I believe the Senate is working on legislation that will force sites that do $1 million per year in business to collect sales tax for all states. They want to even the playing field for local businesses.

That would suck. That's why I buy a lot on Amazon...no tax (plus free shipping).

I live in PA. We have 6% sales on everything but clothing and groceries. If I buy online or from a catalog from a business that does not have a physical store in PA, I don't pay tax. Seems unfair to do that. It's probably just another ploy for the government to generate more revenue.

In Australia, they introduced a 10% G.S.T., (Goods and Services Tax), which effectively put the cost of living up 10% on just about everything, after swearing for years it wouldn't happen. The promise was that Govt. taxes and charges would be reduced to more than compensate for this. Of course, no such thing happened.
No, we have one of the highest Carbon Taxes in the world, despite being one of the smallest in terms of polluting nations, (less than 3%). We used to joke about the Govt. having "a tax on fresh air". It is no longer a joke, but reality, so be careful what you joke about.rolleyes
The 3% for Medicare Levy was a great idea, (and still is), except, yep, you guessed it, the 'free medical' has been greatly reduced as well, with most Doctors are not even interested in Bulk Billing any more. So tuff, if you're sick, too.
Just a matter of time before the G.S.T. gets increased, like the VAT Tax in the U.K. yet the powers-at-be, (Govt.) are still pleading poverty and reducing Public services.

The list goes on. More taxes, less Govt services. Fat-cats, still getting fatter. Hey, what's new?, <*sigh!*>. :kissmy

Yeah, guess taxing on barter systems like eBay, Craigs List, flea markets, etc., etc. are next. What's new, eh?:flip Pretty soon, you won't even be able to mow your neighbour's lawn twenty bucks, without paying "The Man" his cut, first.rolleyes

Not to the brick and mortar business that has to collect local sales tax that puts them at a price disadvantage.

Here in Ontario, Canada, we pay 13% HST (GST & PST) on all goods and services :(, minus essential groceries. Not sure about childrens' clothing though as that years ago was tax exempt. Government taxes and Provincial taxes robbing us blind! Though it must reasonable (ahum) compared to most western European countries who pay lots more.

In Michigan, you are legally required to report any purchases made online that you did not pay our state sales tax for on your income tax return every year (which is when you pay the sales tax, as a line item). No one does, but it has been the law for a few years now that you're supposed to.

Maine charges you tax on $650.00 and you have to prove you did NOT spend that much online from retailers during the year.

Taxation is NEVER fair unless you adopt the FAIR TAX.
That will not happen in my lifetime.

I'll only speak for my part of the globe, since I'm no longer familiar with U.S/U.K., etc., tax laws.
Let's see, for any given dollar we earn, we pay the following taxes:-

    1) Income tax.
    2) Sales Tax.
    3) Import Duties.
    4) In some instances, Stamp Duty.
    5) Goods and Services tax.
    6) Price Protection Duties in many things.
    7) Carbon Tax.
    8) Luxury Tax in some cases.

There are probably more, but that's what I can think off, off of the top of my head. That doesn't include what is classified as "Charges" and not taxes.

Add to that,if your on Social Security, you can expect have your income slashed if you dare get off your butt and earn anything.

So that equates to paying tax about seven times or more for the one item/service. Then, like I said, we are getting cut back on Govt. services, (benefits?) every year. ~ Maybe it's just me, but since most of us get paid only once, that doesn't seem real fair to me. rolleyes

I've been in favor of the fair tax for a long time. My friends say I am wrong because tourism would suffer. "Who's vacationing in a country where you pay 20% (?) sales tax."
Well there's ways around that. For example tourists could turn in their receipts for a rebate, or if every country taxed this way then what's the difference?
Then there's tax issues for low or no income earners. That's easy, no sales tax on essentials including heating fuels, for everyone, but not including gasoline, booze, cigarettes, (and marijuana if they ever get around to that). These are not essentials
After we had discussed this the only friends still against the idea were those that are very well off and enjoying unfair tax breaks at the expense of the rest of us.
The biggest benefit oe this system is you have a choice how much tax you pay.

True. But what about the people who made horse shoes in the 1900's? A flat tax would be so much more simple.

The Belgians would solve their budgettary problems a lot quicker when everyone would just pay their taxes. They're almost like Greece in that respect :D
@sibeer: A lot of European countries have 19% VAT for a lot of things, yet tourism doesn't suffer. Probably has a lot to do with ignorance too - people don't tend to care about taxes (especially VAT) when on holiday ;)

Not to hijack the thread, but I listen to Neil Boortz every morning with my Chex Cereal.
    ;)

At some point we go back to 1773 and revolt at "over taxation"
