Graduating and seeing what collage tuition is it sounded like a good idea. (TO HER) I'm having a hard time with it personally. :cry
Dainty little blonde cheer leader who's biggest concern at this point is she heard they feed you bologna and she has never had it.
    Oh God rolleyes

Her concern is the bologna they feed you?

I'd be having a hard time with it too, Dar. Sorry.:(

Don't feel too bad. It's the navy. They don't get engaged in a lot of ground fighting. Unless of course she wants to be a SEAL.

Agreed, and she's a fair way off being a SEAL yet lol, and if she does it wont matter since they are virtually indestructible :major

Seriously though, it will be good for her. the Armed forces tend to make better citizens :)

Women aren't allowed to be SEALs last time I checked.

Darlene, as a grandmother myself I understand your concern completely about her joining the Navy. The plus side of it is that she would be able to get a good education?

My grandson wanted to join the police force and took some courses in college for it. After some time he changed his mind. As grandparents we were overjoyed to hear about his decision. :)

Problem being also you don't have to engage in combat at times just transporting them ends in crashes.

as for the the bologna, when I was a young girl (with babies) and dirt poor, there were times fried was a treat. ;):-D

That's called "denial". Ask her about her biggest concern again, after her first week in the Navy. ;)

That probably wasn't very comforting. Sorry.

Then again, don't underestimate what having no college loans will do for her, once she graduates, does her years in the Navy, and then sets out to buy a house and possibly have kids. Those loan payments are brutal.

I don't think she has had any bologna yet, her mom said she was complaining about the steel toed boots. Some other people who have children in the service say they feed you pretty good.

I spent many years in the military Darlene including some time working with the US 7th Cavalry and the US Marines. we never went hungry and the standard of the food was excellent even when we were in conflict zones.
There is an old saying in English that "an army marches on it's stomach" and that is still the case, they look after their personnel.

    P.S. What is Bologna.??

Bologna is a disgusting (in my opinion) extremely processed lunch'meat' product. Usually it's a pink color.

Oscar Meyer probably made it popular:

My bologna has a first name, it's o-s-c-a-r. My bologna has a second name, it's m-e-y-e-r. Oh, I love to eat it everyday, and if you ask me why Iiiiii'll say....cause Oscar Meyer has a way with b-o-l-o-g-n-a. :-D

That is off the top of my head, so may not be totally right.

Btw, the 'a' at the end is pronouced as a long 'e'. ....bolonie

Then when you take it out it looks like this:

    Back on Topic:

Good luck with it, Dar. I think there are many good reason for joining the armed forces....I don't think college tuition is one of them though. :(

Yeah, we just call it Polony. It's okay for an ultra-cheap processed meat. Sometimes it's garlic flavoured, etc. I used to give the kids polony sandwiches for school, (as well as fruit and cookies and stuff - I'm not that mean!:p). Before you say anything - I used to get the same for school. Every day for ten years...blahahaha!.:(
Back O.T., all the Navy galleys I've seen, basically issue restaurant, (or at least cafeteria) style food, so it's actually pretty good.

Bologna is no more disgusting than hot dogs, it's just a different shape. ;)

  14. Caliban

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

<----10 years U.S. Army, 1974-'85 - and, yes: there were days (weeks?) when I would have killed for a bologna sandwich...

Darlene, if it's any consolation: Navy Basic Training (especially peacetime) is pretty much a cakewalk. If she's got any common sense about her, and if she is in any kind of shape at all, she should do well...

Any idea what type of specialty she might pursue: electronics (Navy electronics schools are excellent), etc.?

The latest little funny I received from her mom last night was, the day before she went in she spent $100 to have her hair cut. Turns out it wasn't short enough. She said, she could have had it done for free.rolleyes
    Did I mention she's blonde? :-D

I think congratulations are in order.

Like most, she'll likely go in as a child and come out as an adult.

My dad landed Utah beach on d-day. He always said he wouldn't do it again for a million bucks, but he also wouldn't trade the experience for a million bucks. That generally seems to be the sentiment of many vets.

    Good luck to her!

I'd be proud if I were you. Joining the navy isn't as easy as it used to be. They have raised the bar and she's met the requirements. I could see your concern, but rest assured she'll be in the loop in no time. She won't have much of a choice.

But on topic, I agree with Cab, you should be proud and confident, it takes something special to sign up voluntarily :)

I am, I worry a lot. Things crash just being transported from one spot to another. I believe I go through the same fears when they get their drivers license.

  28. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

Well, since stress, primarily related to worry is the biggest killer - then probably best not to worry unduly. People die all the time - even sitting in their own lounge chair or lying in bed - it happens. Worrying just makes it happen sooner. (Coming from a chronic worrier that nearly cost him his life).

I spent a few years in both US Air Force, and their Reserve. No body seems to realize , what was ment by "biggest concern at this point is she heard they feed you bologna".
What that means is, they tell you lots of lies, or some of that "bull crap". Another she'll hear, is hurry up, and wait.....wobbles

....not that a lunch or two has them eating that stuff......I don't eat it to this day, was part of my lunches growing up as a kid...
