Keeping your Toolbox Up to Date

I'm sure we all have our Flash Drive Toolbox, just for that occurrence when someone calls you after they clicked on a less than legitimate link and now are battling never-ending pop-ups. Or for that time when a good friend accidentally emptied their recycle bin, only to remember after the fact that they needed something that is now gone.

So how does everyone keep their toolbox updated? Unfortunately in our line of work, our toolbox is extremely time sensitive. Unlike a carpenter, whose hammer and nails will still be a hammer and nails if its left in the basement for a year, an up to date toolbox can make the difference in a few hours, or a few days. Not to mention the embarrassment of the immediate pop-up of "Your Software is Out of Date" within the first few minutes of taking over the PC.

I've used Ninite on recent machines, more to make the installations easy. But unfortunately it doesn't have all the software and that only works if you have internet access.

So my question again, How do you keep your toolbox up to date with the latest software?

Sadly, it is too hard to keep up with. I usually get the basic tools I need on site. I usually have the basics installed already. I can run CCleaner for example while I download Malwarebytes. I guess because I have limited the tools I need most to a handful it is just easier in the long run.

Oh and I don't answer my phone as much ;)

I'm pretty organized with mine. A lot of the stuff I use is on MajorGeeks so I check the latest downloads page often. That and I'm subscribed to the MajorGeeks RSS feed on my phone.

I have been keeping a changelog of my "toolbox" since Dec 2011.

I feel your pain on this one.

I've actually had customers look up my home phone # in the phone book or by calling directory assistance (Unfortunately, I have a rather unique Italian name - if you can spell it, you'll be able to find me in the phone book :( ).

While I don't mind answering an occasional question outside of work hours, the idiots who call after 11 PM when I'm asleep have riuned it for everyone else. If it's after 10 and I don't recognize the name or # on caller ID, I don't answer the phone.

I'm a non-professional. The handful of friend/family computers I look after don't pick up anything anymore since firewalls and antivirus' are used. My Dad and toolbars though...he won't uncheck the box.
As for work, educating users to not click the "X" on the fake antivirus screen resolved malware issues there.
I visit the malware forum here from time to time to see what new programs you guys are using, so I won't look completely inept.

    So my toolbox gathers dust.
