Windows Explorer won't launch occasionally

Hello there, using a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new intel 320 series SSD I purchased recently.

I've found that a few times since my install last week, I can't open any windows explorer folders, e.g. documents, music, my computer, etc. Everything else seems to be working fine, and I can browse the internet. I've found that logging out of windows and then logging back in will allow me access once more to all my directories.

Today, I ran into an issue where my Dropbox folder froze up, and I couldn't load any other folders. Once I was able to close the dropbox folder, all of a sudden I got a flurry of "the remote procedure call failed and did not execute" for the folders that I kept trying to open. I am not sure if this is related, but it was the first time this week I got some actual warning/error as to why I can't open my directories.

    Any thoughts?

Thanks as always, you guys are the best

Well, I tried that utility that you left a link too, and the first and only thing it did was a check disk check. I don't think it found any errors, but I didn't proceed with anything else until I ran into this problem again.

Well, 9 days since I just ran into this problem once more right now. The utility you posted has many functions I can choose. Which one in particular should I try out now?

    Thank you.

Leave it to default and click apply and reboot.

Major Attitude, despite leaving it at default and applying the fix, I still occasionally get this issue where windows explorer will not open up. It is now usually coupled with all of my programs not opening up for maybe a minute after clicking them. Then after a minute or two, everything opens up all of a sudden.

I think one hint as to what's going on is that not only do all my programs/windows explorer open up at the same time after about a minute, but also the Win+P projector prompt in Windows 7. This seems weird as it is a system function and not just a file stored on the hard drive.

The other thing that may help us to figure out what is going on is that my SSD only has the windows system files and program files. I've shifted the pointer for my documents/music/pictures/downloads to corresponding folders on my secondary hard drive.

What do you think is the next step? It's driving me nuts.

It's been a month and I'm still having problems.

Generally, I find that things like windows explorer and many other programs will not launch upon starting up the computer, sometimes for a very long time, despite the fact that all the startup programs load fine in the taskbar.

Sometimes, out of nowhere nothing will launch

Do you all think I should just try reinstalling windows?

The only thing I could potentially point to causing this is my new SSD having some problems, or possibly the fact that I pointed most things e.g. documents, music, videos, photos, and desktop to a harddrive, while keeping all the programs along with the main OS partition on the SSD.

    Thoughts?

I would have long ago try the format command :)
I can't wait more than a week with such problems, in my eyes format it and hopefuly it will work well. If not, that means you have some hardware issues

A new lead for those interested. In a few topics on the actual intel support forums, some people were having similar issues with a similar desktop configuration.

I've found two different posts indicating that the problem has to do with NCQ enabled on nVidia chipsets with intel SSDs.

    Quote:

    "Controller

00:05.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP55 SATA Controller (rev a2)

There's your problem. There are compatibility issues between nvidias fake-AHCI and SSDs. The usual solution is to run the controller in IDE mode and make sure to disable Command Queueing in the driver."

This is the same controller model that I have. Let's see if this helps.

Disabling command queueing helped with the freezing issue, where no programs would open at all.

Again, the only problem I seem to be having now is the Windows Explorer not loading occasionally.

It's a little weird because I am able to open files if I just look them up on "Everything" i.e. the indexing software, but I cannot open folders.

Will reinstall windows and see what happens.

I had problems similar to this in the past (while using Win XP, Vista and Win 7) with Microsoft's buggy Windows Explorer.

While searching for an answer to these problems; I discovered is a freeware alternative to using it, called as Explorer++ which can do much more than the standard Windows Explorer and it works way better; including the option to see the folder sizes. If you decide to try it out I would suggest looking over the Help files (in order to get the most out if it. Another alternative is ExplorerXP; which is available from right here at Major Geeks: at this link. Both of these two will most definitely work way better than Windows Explorer, with far greater optional choices, as well IMO.

Unfortunately Explorer++ is apparently not available here at Major Geeks; at least I could not find it when I used the MajorGeeks search box. It is however available here: (Explorer++ Home Page)

Side Notes: When using Explorer++ in order to see the folder sizes; go to the Tools menu and click Options then go to the "Folders and Files" tab and check "Show Folder Sizes." After that the program will show the individual folder sizes each time you open it. Also note that it takes like 3 or 3 seconds (after you initially start the program) for the Explorer++ to show folder sizes after you start the program.

    Good Luck - COMP
