    Hello
    Win 7 Home Premium, i5, 1T msie 9.

I checked off both boxes which were; automatically fix file system errors, and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

I tried to keep an eye open at the end of this 3 hour scan, so I could see results but all seemed to vanish.
    How should I interpret this?

Is it an assumption that it is ok or it would have reported an issue or is there a place I must check to find out?
I went to event viewer but could not find anything, or did not know where to look.
I am not techy so if it is good that it just disappeared with no errors to report, I will be ok with that.
    Thank you
    Peter

    Hi Peter

What made you wish or need to run Checkdisk as its not normally a tool I would associate with a regular routine of maintanence, but it should have shown you a report at the end, unless it flashed up and disapeared, but in Event Viewer open up Windows Logs then right click on Application and choose Find and in the search box type chkdsk and click Find Next and the search should find your logs.

Then just find the latest one to read a current log.

On defrag if you dont use the Windows in-built one I agree with MA and Auslogic or IoBit ones are good.

Hello and thank you for replying.
Long story short, Dell replaced a hard drive which had SMART with one that did not. I did not know it so when I ran their test of my hard drive,it reported that SMART was not able to run.
I did not understand so called them and they were confused - I had to Google the issue to find out about my replaced drive being a cheaper one.
They are also having trouble with their Dell Support center downloader so I used what you taught me and downloaded the Support Center to the laptop's cd-rw then installed the program to the destop with that disc.
I wanted to check on the hard drive so ran error checking, but as I said it vanished at the end.
I ran F12 diagnostic which said all is ok.
I will now try to find the results of the error check and be back.
Thanx again. Gee, do you think I would buy Dell again??

I tried to edit but just too late. I found that besides some items being removed there were "no problems".
So, besides verifying the scan I found three new helpful concepts thanx to you both.

I had found this the other day and thought it might be useful to see chkdsk results without going into event viewer. I haven't experimented with the command to limit by date but if you don't mind scrolling through the window it does show the results of your previous chkdsks in a familiar looking format.

    >>Unless there is an easier way to get to the power shell, I cannot see how it is easier than the event viewer.
I read the link well but it seems as though event viewer is the easier of the two.
    Thank you for the thought.
