I miss VHS tapes, I could fast forward thru all the ads and just watch the program I paid to watch.

not the case with dvds, whee I have to wait for it to load, then try to figure out the menus,(cause they are all different), finally I get to the show and I have to select the 2nd or 3rd scene, and go backwards to watch the start

If I bought a newspaper, I own the paper, I can copy it, show it to my friend, paste it on my wall, do whatever I want with it, its MINE. I dont have to be forced to watch previews or other ads, its MINE.

so why cant I get the dvd on to DVR so I can skip all the crap they throw at me?
    how do I do this?

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

DVR's are only meant too Record and play back live TV.No Fast forwarding during the live show.

You can only Fast Forward a show or movie if its been recorded.

Even if you Tried too record and fast forward Through the breaks it would probably mess up the Movie or show you are recording.

The easiest, not quickest way is to rip the DVD so you have just the movie. I use CloneDVD, just select the largest file, it is usually the movie and rip. I'm sure someone else will offer a free way of doing this.
Now to get the dvd content to the DVR, I have no clue, as far as I know DVR's are for recording TV content, not from external devices.
Then you have to get a media streaming device so you can load all your content and watch as you please. I still use an original Xbox with XBMC on it.

There are other ways of getting TV shows that are edited down, but this forum frowns on such talk.

With the kids movies I usually just hit Stop Stop Play and it skips all the ads and plays the movie..... usually. Some DVDs have that disabled. I found that trick when the remote went MIA and Stop, Play/Pause, and Eject were the only external buttons.

my thoughts about getting a dvd on to a dvr was about hooking up the dvd player to TV1, then the dvr connects to TV1 and records off the AUX channel or something like that
so the DVR is recording, manually, off a channelthat you are playing the dvd on
Im not sure of the details, hence this post

Usually most set-top DVR's will not allow you to record from a DVD. Copyright infringement.

hmm I dont know what a set-top dvr is
how do I use my dvr (tivo) to record stuff I play onmy tv via a HMDI cord from my computer
    thats all I wanna do
I know the laws that are on every dvd telling me I can't copy stuff, but isnt this fair use?

I own the dvd, I play it from my computer,(no dvd player) via a HMDI cord.
then I want to record a channel the AUX channel on my tivo
so when Im done watching, I have the dvd content on my dvr
so I have easy access to it, I can't sell it or whatever,
I would be very interested in hearing a case about someone who copied their music on to their computer(which is the same thing) and got fined/went to jail

This has become a most confusing thread! The way I see it the OP has recorded a TV show on his computer complete with adverts and now he wants to watch it using his DVD player. I presume this will be done via his TV.

The remote control on all DVD players is equipped with a PLAY, FF, REW control. The PLAY function can also play at various forward speeds which will allow the user to fast forward through the ads.

There should be no confusion with menus and it should just be a matter of selecting the title which is to be viewed and it will display.

Perhaps if the OP would supply more detail on how he is converting his media to DVD more constructive help will become available

I suggest you go read the words in the 1st post, this is a very simple thread

    I have a dvd
I want the content of dvd on my dvr to do this I do the following:

I play dvd on laptop, it shows up on tv via HMDI cord
so now I want what is being shown on the tv to be recorded on my dvr
I manually have the dvr record the channel(HMDI1) channel of my tv
in the end I have a dvd on my dvr

    still confused?

I have not talked about fast forward or rewinding and recording at all, some other poster got confused and posted about that

This thread is confusing. Let me see if I've got it straight.

You play DVDs from your laptop, to your TV, and output that to your Tivo/DVR to record.
You want to skip all the previews and other crap, yet when you try to use the menus on the laptop you have to select a scene that isn't the 1st scene then rewind to get to where you want it.

Honestly using the laptop is your weak link (just my opinion). If selecting scene 1 doesn't start the actual movie then there's something wrong with the player or the software on the laptop. I'd think that a cheap solution would be a cheap DVD player, connected to your TV or Tivo or whatever and be done with it. With my cheap cheap cheap DVD player I just hit stop-stop-play. No ads, no previews, just the movie.... most of the time. The other times sitting through the previews is just what has to be done.
