Two issues I've had with VLC Media Player that lead me to believe its creators have boarded the SOPA train:

    1. The Glee DVD my friend made me because my VCR had messed up recording the episodes? When I use VLC to play it, it has a great big chartreuse vertical stripe down the middle of the picture with little green horizontal lines in the stripe.

    2. The Official Videos of the Full Performances of Glee numbers that I downloaded from the GleeOnFOX work just fine. The Official Videos of Full Performances that I downloaded from gleefullperformances have the same stripe/line issue as in #1. (These videos were downloaded from YouTube using WebVideoFetcher.com from Google Chrome, but then I YouTube blocked me from downloading the last one so I switched to using Freemake...same problem with the stripe/line when I played it.)

SO! Apparently VLC now has some kind of sophisticated copy detector in it.

What's really interesting is the DVD my friend made me worked just fine in Windows Media Player. It develops a sound-video delay after a while, so I have to look where it was, stop it, and move the bar back to that point...but I think that's a matter of speed of the player on my old laptop.

ANYway...so, I thought I should let people know this because, as with many others, my DVD copy was for personal use only, and I would have had the copy on VHS anyway, had my VCR not screwed the recording up. Also, the downloads from YouTube were for personal enjoyment only, and the gleefullperformances YouTube account is doing nothing but making available the videos that Fox took down to make room for new Official Full-Performance videos from new episodes. They even have a disclaimer saying the videos don't belong to them...and if Fox took issue with them being there, YT would've taken their account down a long time ago because...YT does that.

    Displeased, disgruntled, and dismayed,

So what other choice do we have other than VLC?

    1) I want a video player that plays everything without the need of installing any codecs

    2) I want it to be able to use hardware acceleration without having to go through a lot of troublesome settings like the case in MPC-HC

    3) I wouldn't chosen PotPlayer but I heard that it has a dialer in it which tries to call to Korea

I am lost for the best video player now after you've said this......

    please help

Im curious.... It sounds like a codec issue. Maybe one of your codecs did not install properly. Have you tied to uninstal/reinstall? Also I would like to know what your pc is. You mention using a VCR and that you have an older pc. Not knockin' you but just curious if that may be an issue as well. I, too would like to know what version of VLC your using.

Uhhhh.... there's MANY other players available. Just because VLC has the codecs "built in" doesn't make it any better (or any worse) than any other media player. I've been using Media Player Classic that comes bundled with the KLite Mega Codec Pack for YEARS and never had any problems even close to what you describe. I have played MANY ripped DVDs, many downloaded videos, many YouTube downloaded videos, etc. There seems to be an ingrained "fear" of codec packs, which is odd because VLC is essentially a big codec pack with a media player built in....

VLC is one of the very few players that doesn't require an already installed DVD codec/player. For XP users especially, that puts it very close to top of the 'must have' list (since built-in DVD playing was removed from XP post-Beta).

That said, Potplayer from Daum takes some beating - read the thread at Doom9 carefully! and don't use the built-in updater or you'll end up with Korean, it didn't phase me, but it probably would mess up heads for others ;)

Probably drifted far from the original issue now though.

    Good point. :)

I was also using a combined setup of K-Lite's Codec (Full) pack and MPC-HC as my default. I'm one of those that likes to try new things and found UMPlayer. This program is terrific, I was able to get rid of Winamp (as UM has Shoutcast playing capabilities built in) and K-Lite (as it comes with it's own codecs). Im my opinion, it's playback and functions are even better than VLC's.

UMPlayer is open source. It doesn't seem to be listed here at MG's, here's a link their homepage:

I use several different versions of VLC. Some are installed, while others are portable on the 7 computers in the house. I have not noticed a problem yet on playing any DVD copies.

I've been using VLC without issue for YEARS!!! VLC 2.0.7 (twoflower) and .mp4 files are NOT playing?!??! I can't even trancode them....

Playing from a ripped VOB folder... no problem.
    DivX (X-viD) =< V5, fine.

Codecs installed (of course) but unable to play .mp4 with H.264 + AAC (MP4).
I've tried converting to H.264 + MP3, (AVI &/or MOV container) haven't tried mkv yet.... and tried converting to MPEG + MP3 Audio (avi) - no luck either!

    Any suggestions???
