    Hi there,

I've been having some malware problems on my Acer Netbook (Spec: 1.6GHz chip, 1 GB ram, XP service pack 3, 32 bit). I've run all the steps in the Malware Removal Thread and posted the logs below. I haven't attached logs for Super Anti-Spyware or Malwarebytes because both programs found no threats. I can rescan and attach logs if desired.

Thanks in advance for your help

You will have to be much more descriptive on what your problems are. Your logs are clean.

    Hi,

It's probably okay then. The problems were that the computer was very slow, which was partly due to an excess of start up programs. The tell tale signs of malware appeared when I showed hidden files, too, including one called Recycler, which now appears to have gone. So I used CCleaner to prune some of the start up programs and I learned that the following entry "Ctfmon" is a trojan. It was still there after I carried out all the steps in the Malware Removal Thread so I thought I'd just check to be on the safe side. I guess I'll just use CCleaner to delete the ctfmon entry from my start up programs.

    Thanks for your help

This is not a sign of malware. It is a sign of Windows. ;) It's your Recycle Bin and you should not have deleted it.

CCleaner should not be used to control startups as mentioned in links in the READ & RUN ME. See >> Dealing with Startup Process

Also ctfmon is not a trojan. It is part of Microsoft Office.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Hi, I've carried out those steps and reenabled the start up programs on CCleaner and then disabled them on Spybot instead.

    Thanks for your help!
