I've recently had this issue where I just can't shut down my desktop.

    Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1 64 bit
AMD Phenom II X2 550 Processor 3.10 GHz
    8gb RAM
    Less than a year old

I suspect it's my relatively new powered USB hub, although it didn't start right away after installing it. In Device Manager some USB devices are duplicated (shows up twice), others not.

    Any advice appreciated.

Not familiar with Win 7, but to clarify, are you saying that you can not shut down Windows, meaning shut down the OS?

    Found this which may help:
How to Add "Restart Explorer" to the Desktop Context Menu

As you suspect, this might be caused by a hardware issue.
If no luck here, ask about connect/disconnect powered USB hub in the hardware forum.

I click the Start "orb", click Shut down, and the computer proceeds to shut down then when the shut down procedure finishes it starts right back up again whether I want it too or not. I'd like to shut down to take care of the dust bunnies growing on my cpu fan.

Not sure how adding restart explorer would help me shut down though.

Thanks. That clarifies what is happening.

Not likely. That was all I could find related to "desktop" that might be appropriate.

    Two things to try:

Prevent Windows 7 From Automatic Restart After System Failure

Use the following command in the RUN dialog box:
    shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f

Don't know if that will make any difference, but it's worth a try.

Thanks for the input. I tried the instructions at the link you provided, went into the Advanced System Settings, unchecked the Automatically Restart box and tried shutting down. Same problem, Windows even says it's shutting down as opposed to restarting but it's still starting right back up.

So then I tried your command in a command prompt with the same results.

If you have any other ideas let me know. I'll even try unlikely ones.
    Thanks

At this point I suggest that you consider your Restore Points and Registry backups.
Make sure you have enough disk space allocated so you don't lose one that you may need later.

Next, you can try to properly disconnect the USB hub:

Judging from what I have read, hardware problems can cause Win 7 shutdown problems.

Windows 7 Shutdown problems seem to be, or have been, somewhat common.

This is going to be a long troubleshooting method. Open Task Manager, look at what is running and end a process. Then try and shut down. Do this until you find out which process is causing the hangup.

Of course to work quicker you could end tasks in groups of 4. Once you find the group of 4 items causing the computer to hang, you can concentrate on those 4 by doing two at a time or one at a time.

Honestly, I would check event viewer for errors under the system log. Otherwise, you guys are just looking for a needle in a haystack with no clear direction.

Other than that, I would try safe mode, and if it works, a clean boot. Then slowly re-enable everything until it breaks again. Then you have your culprit.

Update: I uninstalled the USB hub and it shuts down properly now. Now to figure out what combination of USB device/hub it is but I suspect it's my KVM switch.
