upgrade Athlon II X4 640 to Phenom II X4 965? Or throw baby out with water to i5-2500

By, "baby out with water" I mean i5-2500(k) (as in, motherboard with the CPU (replaced)).

Would the Phenom II provide longer gaming future proofing or pretty much the same amount of longevity as the Athlon II X4 ? The Phenom II X4 965 is $125, while going to the i5 would mean a heck of a lot more money.

The motherboard doesn't support any of the Bulldozers is why I'm trying to upgrade so fast, if it's worth it, before places sell out of all of the Phenom II's.

What I'm asking is would I notice any differences at all over the Athlon II X4 ? Would there be a significant upgrade from the Athlon (a $125 one..) ? Should I go ahead and buy the CPU as it's the best CPU I can put in the motherboard seeing as Phenom II's aren't being made anymore, would it stop me from having to upgrade to say.. Ivy Bridge if I bring in a stronger GPU (like a 7850) later ? so on ?

Well, the whole idea was for me to just keep my AM3 board and not have to upgrade to the AM3+ to spend more money lol.

If I was wanting to replace the motherboard I'd just go ahead and go Ivy Bridge (later on).

well only if you plan to overclock put then you need a good heatsink that will add to the price thus a new mobo +cpu will be practically the same.

save the money and go later for an overall change mobo +cpu

frankly all the times i buy a good mobo to have an upgrade path
but always end up bying mobo+cpu

when changing a cpu makes any sence perfomanse somethign 80% faster so it can be noticed not 10-15% which will only show in benchamarks
the old mobos either can not support it 100% or they lack so many new feautures. so keep money and go for a complete

    I got the http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3/M4A88TDV_EVOUSB3/ motherboard. It's got USB3, SATA 6.0, so on.. Just no AM3+ .

According to this: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=102 going up against the king of gaming right now (the i5-2500k) the phenom lacks just a little bit.

    http://www.techspot.com/review/185-amd-phenom2-x4-965/page10.html

    However, http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/122?vs=102

So I'm not seeing "Blow me out of the water" enhancements from the Athlon II X4 ? So maybe it really is NOT worth it (it being upgrading the CPU..) ?

edit: It seems to make more sense for me to start looking at a better video card for DX11 I guess now instead of the CPU ?

well it depents on your graphic card
and the processor you are having will hold down a very fast gpu
but i do not think you aim that high
    whats your gpu?

A 6750. It does DX9 fine, even Metro 2033. But once I turn on DX10 or 11 in Arkham City or Metro 2033, the frame rates drop too much. I think I should start saving for a 7850 or atleast a 6850 ?
