Not sure where to put this but recently my mothers pc had weird noises it wasnt really dusty so im thinking its not the fan on top of the cpu. the computer is a few years old and it only makes the most of the noise when you turn it on.

So is this computer about had it or what

    note: performance is still good

Have you opened up the case to figure out what is making the noise? It would be probably easier to diagnose the machine vs. asking on some random web forum.

Open the case, grab a tube from an empty roll of paper towels and turn the computer on. Use the tube to see if the sound is coming from the hard drive, the power supply, or a case fan.

It needs to be replaced. What do you mean by the fan next to the power supply? Can you take a picture and post?

Does the fan blow out the back of the case or is it mounted on top of a heatsink on the mainboard?

Okay. I am not going to play twenty questions. Unless you have a want to know how to fix it, really need more than a short sentence as if you are sending a text message.

Really, it is not that hard to replace the fans, you can get them at Bestbuy, order at newegg.com or on Amazon.com, or go to your local Mom & Pop computer store and pick one up. If it is the CPU fan or the Power supply fan, those are also readily avail, but with the PS it is a little harder to replace that one.

It sounds like it's just a case fan. It should be plugged in to a header on the mainboard. They can be purchased at most computer stores or service centers. Just make sure you match the screw pattern and check the wires and plug configuration, they typically have anywhere from 2 to 5 wires.

Or you can do what I do...

Take the fan out, get a nice cozy towel, bring the fan to a nearby sink, and rinse the $#!4 out of it, dry it with the towel, let it set for 10 minutes, then spray wd40 in it excessively, dry it again AND done. Takes about 20 minutes to do. I have done this about 4 times already, make sure it is dry prior to re-installation.

I don't think I would want WD-40 being slung around inside my computer nor would I want to have to smell WD-40 while sitting at my computer.

    The fans are really inexpensive.
