    Hi
We've recently had a major problem with a stand alone pc at work, it lost a certain .dll file which caused the computer not to boot up. The unit went away and got recovered and we can now boot up etc, we then realised that the email and internet weren't working properly. The email has now been sorted but the internet problem remain

When you click on internet explore the search page comes up as normal but if you try to input a web address manually it comes up with a cannot find memory error. Also i cannot connect to any of the favourite in my favourite bar.

I've tried to connect to windows update but it comes up with an error message saying it can't connect to the update as some files are missing, so I downloaded internet explore 8 and tried to install it again manually but when it comes to the part about connecting to the internet it just keeps saying cannot connect to internet program

HELP im at a loss now

P.S Ive also tried using firefox but that just keeps crashing as well

The computer is running Windows XP

The exact error message when directly inputting a web address is "Invalid access to memory location" this comes up in a pop up box

Are you able to perform work on this PC at work? Are there programs that you can re-install, if yes one solution you can go with is a fresh install and migrate permissions, settings, registry and files over to the new OS.

The fresh install should cover your IE problem. (I'll be back in about 2 hours or so to ask more questions about your current system (at work). Maybe I can figure out what is causing it.)

    Is this you? http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...-it-says/79b45468-596d-46f7-b5a6-7606313c609d
Try doing what is outlined in that answer.

I also found that this sometimes happens when windows update engine is broken. Run windows update and see if it works.
If it does not work, then try this: (press enter after each command is typed)
Reboot and see if that fixes it.

    Thanks for the response,

I think I've managed to fix the problem, automatic updates downloaded a few updates this morning which didn't update the Internet explorer issue but did enable me to use the new install of Internet explorer 8, all installed and updated and touch wood it all seems to be working fine :)

Any further problems I'll certainly be back in touch

Why not check the modem and net connection, don't merely focus on the software iteself.

Thanks, We checked the hub 1st and that was connecting fine, also the other computer on that hub had no problems.

It might possibly be a sign of impending HDD failure so i've backed everything up, I'm pretty sure it's not virus / malware related as i've checked the computer with AVG 2012 and Malwarebytes anti maware.

Anyway it all seems to be running smooth at the moment :)

    Thanks Again
