Problem downloading executable files

Windows 7 (Home Premium 64 bit)
    Firefox (11.0)

When I attempt to download executable (.exe) files, they appear to download correctly but when I click on the downloaded file in the download window, nothing happens. A check of the folder where downloads are saved shows no sign of the file.

I am primarily a Firefox user so most of the description of the problem relates to FF - similar problems in IE 8.0 (file appears to download but no sign of the file).

I have gone through the Read & Run Me First process, log files attached.

    Any suggestions welcome !!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Then how did you get the files from the READ & RUN ME to work?

It did not sound like you are having malware problems and your logs agree ( although your ComboFix log was incomplete. It looks like you had a problem running it. ) Seems more likely you have a configuration issue of some sort on your end. You may want to make sure that you are not blocking them with your firewall or something else.

You can ask general questions about downloading, saving, running files in our Software Forum.

    Thanks for the reply.

I downloaded the files on another computer and transferred them with a memory stick.

Ok thanks for that - it is re-assuring that it appears there is no malware. This is my daughter's laptop and she is only home for the week. I have not spent a lot of time checking the configuration over on it but I will dig into that. If I come up with something that baffles me, I'll post on the software forum.

Thanks again and although this is only my second post here, I have "lurked" here several times and successfully used the Read & Run Me First process at least three times on other computers and it has cleaned them up. Very useful forum.

    You're welcome.

If you had said that you could not "run" executable files, we would be more concerned as malware will do this. But not being able to save executables has always been some form of a settings issue. Or possibly a folder permissions issue with where you are trying to save the files. If it is only exe files and no other file type, then it would not be a folder permissions issue but rather some other security setting or security software on the PC.
