Since i upgraded my system now, i been running windows xp for the longest time and think I would like ot switch over to windows 7 (I like the way it looks and some of the features )

I have always heard of people talking about how they got it free or had tons of copies or they were offering free for a limited time.

Is there a legal way to get a FREE copy of windows 7 ? :major

The short answer is "no". If you want a copy pay for it. There are methods of obtaining a free copy and I have no intention of helping you along a path to piracy!

Please do not sit here and make it sound as if
    (A) I asked you to help me along a path of piracy
    (B) That my intentions were of piracy

If you actually READ the post, i specifially stated that I was asking if there were any LEGAL way's to obtain a copy, sometimes they give out copies of windows for free as promotion of a new release upcoming (windows 8) or sometimes you can download a trial period to see if you like hte system <- wihch is what i was looking for.

So once again if you had no answer to the question there was on need to post a reply that made it sound as if I was a bad guy looking to pirate software... that would be the definition of a troll...

So , ONCE again I would like to make it clear that I do not pirate anything and do not support it, I was asking for a LEGAL way to obtain a trial or a copy of some sort.:major

The cheapest way to get windows seven is if you have an .edu address from a school, microsoft has a few student options that gets you a full copy of either home or pro for like 70 bucks, other then that i really haven't heard of any give aways or anything for windows seven.

I had no intention of labeling you as a pirate or whatever, my answer was quite legitimate and it is regrettable that you have taken it to be an attack on your character. Of course there are legal ways of obtaining a copy of Windows 7 as has been mentioned above. If you visit the Microsoft site you will discover that you can download Windows 8 as a trial but you will still have to pay for it in the long run. I did read your post in it's entirety and yes I did note that you mentioned "legal" but for all that my reply was quite in order.

Yes. Check around at your local community colleges and see if their computer department is an MSDN Academic Alliance member. If so, sign up for a computer class. Won't cost that much, and you'll have access to ALL KINDS of free Microsoft software. Windows 7, Vista, XP, Server, Visual Studio, Forefront, all kinds of stuff. All free, all full versions, and 100% legal.

Except by the time you pay for a college course you could pay for windows 7, and still have money for lunch.

    True, it's technically not free.

Like I said though, having access to MSDNAA gives you access to most of Microsoft's catalog. If all you want is a copy of Windows 7, then yeah you're probably better off just paying the $200 for a copy of it and being done with it. Or you could pay the $200 (about what a community college course in my area costs), get Windows 7 Professional, Home Premium, Ultimate, (x64 and x86), Windows Vista Enterprise, Home Premium, Professional, (x64 and x86), Windows XP Professional, Windows Server 2008, and much more, AND learn about computers. You might even be able to get financial aid to cover it. Just saying.

It's legal, but I wouldn't go so far as to say 100% legal. If you read the fine print, you'll discover it says you're supposed to uninstall the MSDN software when you are no longer a student (or in whatever organization gave you access). Enforced, no, but technically illegal to keep it.

In any event, just signing up for a computer department class is no guarantee to get access. My school's CSC department had MSDN, but only one of the 5 CSC classes I took gave me access. I was even a TA for one of them for 2 years.

The bolded part is all that really matters. They couldn't care less. Now, if you're somehow using a student copy to deploy an image of Windows 7 Ultimate to all the workstations in an entire office building or something of that nature then yeah, they might have a problem with it.

Right, that's why I said check first. ;)

My point was more that the department might have access, but classes don't give it to the students. In my case, there was no way to know this before taking the class. That isn't something the department is likely to tell you.

Never know unless you ask them.

Lol, hey can i access msdn if i take your class, yeah that doesn't sound like your just doing it for the msdn access. It is no lesser crime to pirate a copy of seven then it is to goto a msdn deal, then stop taking the courses and still using the software. We dont condone that kinda thing here puny, stop suggesting it.

Who said anything about signing up for the class, raiding the MSDN library, and then dropping the class? Because it wasn't me. He asked for a legit way to legally get the program for free and I gave him one.

If you are a student, you can get Windows Server 2008 R2 for free from www.dreamspark.com if you don't have an MSDN-AA account. It is based upon Windows 7 and can be converted to workstation use.

To be honest, I like it better than Windows 7.
