I've recently upgraded my IBM thinkpad t42 to window xp, recently installed all my drivers, now once I find my wifi and select it it never connects always fails. I've tried everything now I'm confused on what to do next.

    What have you tried?

There are no yellow or red marks over any hardware in the device manager?

I have had two recent occurances like this. One was that my wireless card didn't want to work with the encryption type I had. I tested without any encryption and finally connected. I fixed the problem hardware from there. Your wireless worked before but the new drivers could still cause this problem. When I had the issue, my wireless connected, it didn't fail the password, just never got any further.

The other issue I've seen more of, the DHCP service wasn't running. That is in the control panel > administrative tools > services. If you aren't using static IPs, all of the services related to DHCP should be started.

If none of these 3 areas are of help, we will need more details about what exactly is happening or not happening when you connect.

I've reinstalled all the necessary drivers, restarted my modem and router, set everything back to defaults, I've run out of ideas. I press connect to my wifi, it waits for the network then never connects. And I've tried the tip you gave about dhcp was already started

You have removed the encryption from the wireless? On your computer, you have gone into the list of preferred networks and removed your network from the list after removing the password/encryption from the router? It still would not connect?

Is it possible to try attaching this laptop to the router via an ethernet cable? Will it connect properly via ethernet?

It connects properly through ethernet but as for the encryption i dont know how to do that.

Do you know how to access your router? What model is the router, I can look up the interface and what page the encryption is on.

Also, on the computer, go to view network connections, right click the wireless connection and select properties. In the advanced options, find the list of wireless connections, locate the one that you use and delete it from the list.
(sorry for losing the specific instructions, just realized that i'm not on the laptop right now. I can give you step by step if you don't see the list)

Yes I know how to access it, but it's a NetGear WNR1000V2 paired with a Ubee D3.0 Modem.
And I went to Network connections/right clicked wireless network connection/and went to advanced but I saw no list, is the list also under wireless networks tab?
