So yesterday my laptop decided to stop broadcasting sound from the Audio Output jack, rear jack pink, and only the headphones on my headset work. The computer doesn't detect incoming sound, but if I switch default device to the microphone, it becomes the computer's built-in microphone which does play sound.

    Any help?

Welcome to the forum:) Can your post your operating system and the model of your laptop.

The pink jack is the audio 'input' jack or microphone jack, this could be simple setting problem within control panel, sound, audio devices or your microphone or the jack has stopped working or your microphone has stopped working.

First try the headset on another computer to confirm they definitely work or try another microphone,go to control panel, system, device manager and look for any red crosses or yellow exclamation marks and post findings.

If I assume windows 7 go to control panel, sounds, recording and right click a white part of the box, make sure "show disconnected devices" and "show disabled devices are ticked" If they are not you may get now see "external microphone" right click this and enable and set as default communication device.

Now try your mic,use sound recorder to test your mic to eliminate third party software and settings if you haven't already,if you get audio in that but you don't in the software your using to test post the name of the software.

So I right click and set default device and default communication device in sound. http://i.imgur.com/wKEh3.png

Recorded something and no sound occurs. The sound bar in sound next to the device doesn't even go up, the built in mic does though.

You see the device at the top 'mic at rear panel pink' right click that and set it as the default communication device, you should get a green tick next to it like the internal 'microphone' has now.

If this works great but if it doesn't test the microphone in another computer or try another mic to confirm it works as all this could be pointless if the mic is broken.

That dosen't work. The mic works on another computer but not this one.

What doesn't work? Do you have a green tick next to the external pink mic now? Also disable all other devices in the recording pane, now hide disabled devices you should now have just the external microphone showing and a single green tick.

Do you have any other audio devices connected such as usb headphones ect.

Check device manager also as I said earlier and post your findings.

Also no that doesn't work. I've been thinking the jack might be broken.

    No that's sound devices,

Control panel, system, device manager, look for yellow exclamation marks and red crosses.

There are other things to try, right click the microphone in sound devices, properties under the general tab make sure it says "use this device enable",under listen make sure it says use this device and not disable this device on battery, under levels make sure its turned up to full volume and not muted.

in the taskbar look for an icon for your sound card I don't know what it would be labelled as or what options you will find in there as I don't own that notebook mine are called IDT audio settings I think yours is realtek audio settings so have a look for any settings relating to the microphone or recording device and try enabling and disabling them.

Anther thing to try is to reinstall the audio driver for your laptop, uninstall from control panel, programs then reinstall the driver

I think this is your notebook driver but double check.

I tried that, I'm getting some feed back from the mic now, the file is in this: http://www.mediafire.com/?lptsdt2fss0cksy

I hear my voice with LOTS of feedback. My voice is very quiet.

I am about to go to bed so tomorrow I'll respond to your resopnse.

If you've just reinstalled the driver check the volume of the mic now in control panel, sound, properties level as I described before and also enable microphone boost.

If the feedback gets louder along with your voice it could be sign the microphone is damaged but it doesn't explain why installing the driver suddenly made a broken microphone work, also any audio at all usually means the jack is fine as is the mic plug, you could try cleaning any grease off them though and inside the jack with a little twisted cloth.

    Sleep tight:p

EDIT can you post a link to the driver you've installed, also I'd still like you to check device manager for any hardware errors.

Okay so I used the driver you gave me to install, Realtek Audio Driver

Yesterday I thought it was the mic broken, returned it to best buy, got a new one, and it's still doing this. So it's not the headphones. I tried cleaning the jack and it didn't work

So now my mic will work, but I hear my voice very quietly and ONLY if I put it in front of my mouth and speak loudly. And that's sometimes.

    Could it be drivers?

    ...

    I'm waiting for you...

Once in device manager right click your audio devices and check the status of them all, they should all say device is working properly

The next thing I would try would be to try the microphone and computer in a none windows environment to try and eliminate hardware or software fault in the computer, linux mint has a built in sound recorder that works with basic mics.

I've never used the sound recorder so you'll have to try it on your own,the sound recorder is in accessories IIRC.

I also asked if you have an icon for your sound card properties in your taskbar have you found it yet?

Your device manager looks fine, you need to look for your sound card properties icon in taskbar as I said and look for settings in there, the taskbar is at the bottom of your desktop,at the right near the clock are a bunch of icons, the little arrow pointing up will show the icons, look for an icon relating to your sound card probably named realtek and double click it.

This is clutching at straws though we've been through all the relevant settings, the problem is if its a software issue the mic won't work at all so I'm pretty confident its a problem with your laptop, testing outside a windows environment will prove this conclusively.

It's the laptop. Microphone works on my sister's mac. Contacted asus support when I started this topic, no response yet. Sigh.
