Does anyone know whether you can purchase a desktop today without the onboard NIC? If not would I need to go external with a USB NIC?

You may still be able to find one, but the majority have onboard NIC's now days. By now though, you would think that they would come with wifi onboard and dump the dial-up modem.

Any idea where I could find one? All the major vendors seem to have onboard NIC

Why would you want to have a computer without an onboard NIC?

Sometimes you want to add your own NIC, especially if it is a server.

You are going to have to find out for yourself. You can go through tigerdirect.com & newegg.com and look at all of the different m-boards that they both sell. You really are not clear as to what the function will be, so it is hard to determine why you do not want onboard ethernet.
