I have to restore my computer, I lost all of my data, but I had most of it on External HDs
but now my sound wont work?
    I have a MS windows 7 home premium 64-bitch SP1
and the sound was fine before the restore, music plays, but no sound

any idea what I can do?

Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Change System Sounds.

Under the Sounds tab make sure Windows Default is selected in the dropdown box and hit apply.

There probably isn't one because you have music but is there any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager under sound?

You might want to try the fixit also.

I am not that familiar with HDMI. It may be that the driver needs to be installed. HDMI usually is associated with the graphics card. Also, if you go into Sound, under playback devices, is there a listing for HDMI? You may have to set that to default.

Is there a yellow exclamation mark next to any of the sound devices?

This link is for HP but is has good troubleshooting for HDMI.

Did you get it to work? Not sure why you were able to automatically do it before.
    See if this works.
Set your speakers to default. Disconnect any HDMI cable you have attached. Then with the HDMI playback device shown as disconnected, set it as default. Now plug in your HDMI cable and see if it will switch back and forth between HDMI and speakers automatically.
