Netbook is slowing down/constantly freezing.

It frequently slows down out of nowhere, pretty much as soon as I try to browse the web or start any other application. Everything just stops responding, and then the screen just freezes with only my cursor being able to move. It's really starting to tick me off - I've tried to see if it's different on another account, and it was fine for a while, but then it started doing it again. The problem has gotten so mind-numbingly annoying and bad that I had to make this post in Safe Mode.

Any thoughts on what the problem may be?

I've had this netbook for only 3 weeks.

My first thought is overheating is the problem i think , download this tool

informing about your temp , what is the place in which your laptop is ? ( on the table for instance ) :wave

Don't worry , you must download this cd

    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

    burning this with

    http://majorgeeks.com/ImgBurn_d4870.html

checking your hdd , go to Start - Computer - right click in hdd - Properties - Hardware tab looking for hdd company , after that go to cd - select it's company tool , next step is checking your Ram memory with memtest86 which is in the cd ( for 6 hours at least ) :wave

I'm usually terribly bad with following guides that aren't practically step-by-step, so I'm a bit confused as to where I'm supposed to go in the two programs I've downloaded.

This is a laptop and not a netbook, correct? (netbooks do not have internal optical drive, notebooks and laptops do).
It came with 4GB of RAM, correct?

  16. brownizs

    brownizs MajorGeek

That would be correct. Netbooks, you have to hook up a USB dvd drive to have optical. As for the OP helping, they have totally missed the point of what the problem is. I can say that it is nothing to do with the hard drive.

Lets start from the beginning, and forget what the OP has attempted to not do to help you. What operating system are you running? What program or programs were you running at the time that the system was freezing? Are there any events if Windows XP, Vista or 7, that show in admin tools > Events that show why it is freezing?

Has nothing to do with the hard drive, but without knowing what you were doing at the time, or what program you were using, who knows why it was freezing, without more insight.

brownizs, Yoozil seems to think his computer is a netbook. He used the term netbook in the title and in his post. I'm trying to determine if he has a netbook and typed the model incorrectly or if he has the model correct and owns a laptop.
Once we know the hardware, the next thing I usually ask is how much RAM.
Of course AVG can slow a computer to a crawl.

AVG will not slow a computer to a crawl, unless said computer is a old P3, celeron from pre-2002. And as for the machine, it is far from being a Netbook. My main computer is a netbook that runs Ubuntu 12.04. I should know, because I am on it right now. Of course, my other is a iPhone, and I have a Nook with a N2A card in it, to make it a android tablet. God I have been in this business so long, I remember going to my dad's office and sitting at a Dec PDP-11, then getting to play with a VT100, when he did consultant work for one of the first computer stores in our town.

Going back to the OP question at hand, I would not put it first that they are either trying to do too much at once, or have been cruising the darkside of the web and caught some nasties, or just need to have someone sit down with them and show the various points of knowing how to use stuff like the event viewer, the sysinternal's tools like Process Explorer.

With 4gb of RAM, they should not have problems with that machine, or running AVG on it, unless something is a miss.

Hey Yoozil, Can you please down load and run Speccy. Speccy can take 30+ seconds to run.
Next click on File (top left) and then Save as Text file. Please attach the report in you next post.
Do edit out the Operating System serial number from the report before posting.

Please run Speccy in Normal Mode.

Does the system slow down in Safe Mode with Networking?

    Cheers..

Speccy is not going to tell them anything. The OP needs to go back to post #17 and do what I stated. People need to quit pulling stuff out of the air that has nothing to do with the OP problem, other than satisfy all of yours curiosity as to what machine they have, not how to resolve the issue.

Sorry for the late reply, and as for the whole thing as to whether I'm on a netbook or not, I got the model right - I'm sure of it, it's just that when my brother gave this to me he called it a netbook. Not sure if that's the right term or not.

    Anyways,

    1. Windows 7 64-bit.
    2. It began with me playing VLC videos, then eventually it would slow down and bring the entire laptop to a halt. So I tried a different media player, but it would then do the same thing after a while. Then, after that, it started happening while I was just browsing the web. I use Chrome, if that's important.
    3. Not as far as I can tell.

    No, not at all.

It runs fine in Safe Mode with Networking.

Click Start/Windows Orb, in the search field type msconfig. When msconfig lists, click it and hit the Services tab. Place check on "Hide all microsoft services". Uncheck all the services listed now, click Apply and OK out. Reboot.
Check and see if your system is slowing down. If not, then from msconfig start to enabling one service at a time. Reboot each time. Test your system.

I'm hoping a third party application is causing an issue- and this is a way to root it out.
If after disabling third party services, the machine still slows down then we'll move on to other steps.

Due you see any process in taskmanager (Show processes from all users) with high CPU usage.
@brownizs I wanted to check the Speccy log for any anomaly in running processes and get a look at RAM usage for the same. It may or may not be of any consequence, I'm aware.

Yoozil could you provide us with the Speccy report, please. It may divulge some info.

    Cheers..

sikvik, stop pulling stuff out of the air that has nothing to do with the problem. The OP stated that VLC playing videos was when it would start slowing down. What they need to do, is install SysInternals Process Explorer to look and see what is happening when things go wonky.

Not run msconfig, speccy, or whatever tool that has nothing to do with the problem, that you keep pulling out of nowhere. You are not helping the OP in fixing this.

Yoozil, go to microsoft.com and download the Sysinternals suite. It has a lot of good tools, and the process explorer is the tool that you can use to see what is causing this.

What other programs are you running beside VLC? Your laptop should not be having these problems that you are describing, unless there is an underlying issue, such as doing background processes, like P2P, so many programs open that the computer is running out of RAM to do anything with.

Forget msconfig, speccy, or what other tool that will not solve the issue that the OP is yelling out. Trust me on this one.

System specs are basically a rule here. Its easier to help someone when you know what they have. You are not a moderator here, please use report a post when there is a probelm rather than spend your time telling people how to behave. We have moderators for that, let us do it, ok? Thanks.

Just Chrome, that is pretty much it.

Oh, and here's the speccy report in case anyone is wondering.

The problem with stuff like "speccy", is that it just takes a snapshot at that moment. It will only tell you what is happening right then and there, not for a long term. When you did run it, it looks like all you were doing was running Chrome at that time.

It appears that Norton is still running on that machine, even though you have AVG. You need to get Norton completely off of the machine, if you plan on just running AVG.

Download Sysinternals from microsoft.com and run Process Explorer, while doing your every day computing, and also look in the events to see if any errors are in there.

I also turn off stuff like Windows Searcher & indexer, due to you really do not need them, and even though your machine is a pretty good one, depending on how much info has to be indexed, Windows can lock the system at that moment to allow that task to become a foreground process, and not stay as a background process as it should.

I could've sworn I removed Norton. It doesn't show up in the list of programs that can be uninstalled, nor does it show up when I search for it.

I also have one thing to note: this laptop had an LED keyboard function. Thing is, ever since this has started happening, whenever I try to turn it off, it doesn't work. The LED keyboard has been on for days now.
