Check Disk

Hello- I am running Windows XP Pro X86. On occasion, I run a Disk Check, using the 'automatically fix file system errors' and 'attempt to recover bad sectors' options in My Computer> Local Disk> Properties> Tools. As of late, the screen freezes black after the CHKDSK is complete and the system reboots, forcing me to do a hard shut down. Could someone please offer some advice on how to remedy this? Thank you.

 

Don't know what is causing the freeze, but here is a work around.

First, you can turn OFF the Automatic restart for System Failure:

Control Panel > System > Advanced tab :

In the Startup and Recovery box, click Settings
In the System failure box, Uncheck Automatic restart

Try running Chkdsk from the Recovery Console.
If the Recovery Console is not already in your Startup Menu, you can use these instuctions:
How to install the Recovery Console to your hard drive

To run Chkdsk in the Recovery Console and do exhaustive check of the drive and correct any errors:
chkdsk /P

To run Chkdsk in the Recovery Console and ALSO Locate bad sectors and recover readable information:
chkdsk /R

Try /P first as it is Much quicker.

 

Thanks, 'mjnc'-On this last install of XP, I didn't install Recovery Console. Can I run the 'Chkdsk /P' from a 'cmd' prompt?...

 

If you want to run chkdsk from a 'cmd' prompt and do the same thing, the syntax is:

chkdsk /F

To also locate bad sectors and recover readable data:

chkdsk /R

 

Thank you, 'mjnc', for all of your assistance. I'm still not sure why it won't work from within Windows 'C:>Properties>Tools'. That's the way I have always ran it, and it would run fine after the next start up. Oh well!
