According to this site, the SIS650 motherboard has a SIS650 for the northbrdge and a SIS961 for the southbridge which is your IDE controller. I am not sure why it lists a SIS315 as the SIS650 is a graphics chip also. You can download all of the required drivers here.

Do you have any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

I do not know how old the computer is but here is the Gericon site. It may have something you are looking for also.

    Hi tgell
firstly thanks for your response. I have been to the sis site and downloaded all the sis 650 drivers ebven the ide driver and still I have the problem, there are no exclamation marks in the device manager but all I know is it boots in safe mode but not safe mode with networking or normal mode so am assuming its a network issue. It works fine with win98se and win 2000

When you check the properties of the network adapter, do you have TCP/IP shown and also client for Microsoft Networks?

Has SP3 been installed? If it has and TCP/IP shows in the properties of your adapter, try resetting TCP/IP.

At the command prompt in an admin account.

    netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

    hi tgell
I cant check the properties as it wont boot to windows it only boots to safe mode without networking this is my problem. In safe mode you dont have any network stack started and there are no network adapters shown so cant check tcpip properties. Cheers for the reply:(

Hi Tgell I have done 4 clean installs from different images from xp basic right up to sp3 have replaced the disk and the memory as I had some going spare. I would like to trap the boot info on a normal boot but it gets overwritten if you boot up in safe mode. It is frustrating as I know the HW is good as it worked with win98se and 2000 I even got onto the web. I may put win 2000 back on it as its going into a charity raffle but hate to be beaten Grrrr

When you say "installed XP from different images", you are not saying the images were taken from XP installs on other computers, correct?

This is definitely weird. The only thing I can think of you might try is to set the BIOS to default and possibly disable the onboard NIC in BIOS.

I have several images of all operating systems as I build lots myself do the image is a bootable ISO with SPs and I have keys. I have updated and set the bios to defaults but the bios is ami and it has very little that you can do in it so you cant really disable stuff as such. I am persuing another option at the mo. I try to load win 7 and it fails with error 5. this is aknown problem for earlier systems and there are workarounds using UBCD4win to kick off the win 7 install so am persuing that. Will let you know

Just an update and a note of thanks to all who helped, especially tgell. I gave up as win 7 locked up as well. Didn't really expect that to load. I have reloaded win 2000 on it and am going to raffle it off to raise money for my charity. Hey someone will get summat they can play with. BTW network works now on win 2000. Again cheers guys

Glad you got it working and thanks for the feedback. Definitely weird that only 2000 would work on it. Never came across this before. I was just curious. When you right click on the network adapter in Device Manager of 2000, does it list what the network chip is like in XP and if it does, what is listed? Thanks.

No it doesn't give much info in device manager not even vendor ID. I loaded the sis900 driver on it and that was fine. Its the same driver that xp uses. The only diff I can see tgell is that none of these miniport devices are there just the ethernet adapter. XP configures a raft of wan miniport devices but all drivers for them are xp drivers its really strange.
