July 14, 2005 at midnight I smoked my last cigarette. I tossed out all my ash-
trays lighters and matches. July 15, 2005 my first day tobacco free. Tomorrow will make 7 years and there has been no cheating. :cool

Wow, that IS reason to celebrate.

An MD once told me that nicotine is more addictive than cocaine, but I find that hard to believe.

I quit as of January 10, 2012, But I did slip a couple of times six weeks ago.

I do feel better and I'm exercising more.

    Be grateful.

    Good for you, Bob! :)
I quit smoking when I was 25 years old. This summer marks 30 years without smoking.

That's awesome Bob, I have tried a couple of times and for now have resided on the notion I give up once a week.... every Sunday night... until Monday morning :-D
Kudos to you my friend, one of the hardest things to do is give up smoking, if you have never been a smoker (kudos to you) then you have absolutely no idea what it is like.
To anyone thinking of smoking or just started.... STOP!... RIGHT NOW!
Trust me, it's not worth it.

The comparison used at the VA clinic I went to was comparing nicotine to
    heroin

Well, whatever it compares to, it is some evil chit. Great to see so many 'quitters'.

    Congrats again. :-D

    Congrats.

I was told the same thing by an MD. He said medical science still hasn't figured out the exact reason; however - depending on how your brain is hard wired - dropping a nicotine addiction can be all but impossible for some people.

I quit smoking in 1992, but with a caveat: I still have a nicotine addiction I satisfy with nicotine gum. My doctors over the years have been fine with this. By itself, nicotine is basically no more dangerous than caffeine. It's the tar, formaldehyde and dozens of other chemicals you inhale when smoking that kill you.

I've tried Wellbutrin, the patch, Chantix, etc. to totally kick the nicotine addiction to no avail. For those who can't get off nicotine, gum seems to be the best option.

Note to anyone else trying to quit: Stay away from Chantix. In addition to the psychotic episodes in can trigger in some people, it'll make your stomach feel sick as hell. :puke

I was given Zyban(similar to Wellbutrin) and patches. The only side affect I had were some very vivid dreams.

Whether it's nicotine, cocaine, heroin, caffeine or amphetamine, although they each have a different effect, they have at least
one thing in common, they all stimulate the production and/or release of dopamine, which produces a feeling of euphoria.

Wellbutrin and Zyban are brand names for the same drug Bupropion.
As for the vivid dreams, I had a similar reaction and some nightmares as a reaction to Sertraline (Zoloft).
