Hello guys I need help... My Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop has a weird problem. the laptop does not recognize the power adaptor and hence it is not charging but when I remove the battery and keep plugged in, it shuts down. (That means battery is fine just not charging). I can not bypass the battery coz if I do, the laptop shuts down. I had to take the battery to another laptop and get it charged. When I return it back to my laptop and plug in, it displays 2500 hours remaining-not plugged in. when I remove the power adapter, it displays 2 hours remaining-not plugged in. Please help me!!!

It might be worth it to buy another power adapter, like this
    http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Power-Supply-Dell-INSPIRON/dp/B001BTOG0E

If that doesn't work, then the problem is on the soldered connection on the motherboard that the adapter plugs into.

Maybe one of the geeks here can tell you how to rest the socket before you spend money for an adapter that might not be needed.

You mentioned that you charged the battery on another laptop. If the power adapters are the same (carefully read all the specs posted on the adapter), try swapping out the adapter and see if it works on your Inspiron 1420.

Thanks Plodr for your reply. I checked with another (compatible) adapter and it is still not charging. I believe its not Battery or adapter, it is something on the motherboard circuit as you said. Is there a way we can reset or repair the circuit that charges the laptop battery?

i think the problem is the actual soldered connection from the adapter plugin to the mobo..

    Hi Im no geek,

I have to agree with ValRvd. With it unplugged see if the innards wiggle. If so then it's busted loose or the connector is broken. I've fixed a lot of those. Some are difficult as the mother board has to be removed. Some have the connector on a small PC board with cable and plug to the mother board. Those are fairly easy. Google for the Service Manual to see how your's is put together.

    Good Luck, Jim

    Hello,

My name is Navin and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell.

If the system is not powering on with only the ac adapter plugged in, then either the ac adapter or the system board connector is faulty. You can check with a known good ac adapter from a different system. If the system will not power on then the issue is with the motherboard connector. Please check to see if the power LED is lit up on the charger. You can also wiggle the cable that connects to the system to check if the connector has a loose contact.

Since the battery is able to charge on a different system, the battery is not at fault.

Dell_NavinR, we already determined a few posts back that the problem was the system board connector. The OP said
    . See post #3

He needs to know how to fix the motherboard adapter.

    Hello,

The motherboard adapter is soldered on to the motherboard, If the system is within the warranty period, i can help him replace the motherboard under warranty. If the system is out of warranty, he may contact a local technician who may service the motherboard.

Please click on the link below for the service manual for the Inspiron 1420,

My power adapter is working and my battery is working
Too. The port does not wiggle
So its not a loose commection. I think its the charging mechanism that has gone bad. It could be because of voltage fluctuation that caused this damage. What is the solution to that problem?

    Hello,

Please update the BIOS with the latest firmware. Ensure that the battery is charged before updating the BIOS firmware. You will have to leave the AC Adapter plugged in to the system during the BIOS flash.(Although your system shows 2500 hours when plugged in). If the system does not recognize the AC Adapter even after the BIOS update, then the motherboard needs to be replaced.

    Hello,

Check the BIOS firmware version, The latest version for the Inspiron 1420 is Version A10. You will have to flash the BIOS firmware. Ensure that the battery is charged before flashing the BIOS. Also leave the AC Adapter plugged in during the BIOS flash, although the system shows 2500 hours remaining with the AC Adapter plugged in. If the system does not recognize the AC Adapter even after the BIOS flash, the motherboard needs to to be replaced.

    Hi Again I'm No Geek,

Sounds like the connectors are OK. Bear in mind that most of the Charger circuit is located in the Battery case so you may just have a bad battery. Try another battery if possible.

    Luck, Jim
