XP Splash screen hangs a few minutes

:confusedhi,on start system bios is ok, then when going into XP splash screen it hangs for a few minutes. I can see the windows logo faintly in the background. I then I hear some hd activity and the logo gradually appears and all is well.

does anyone haveany suggestion. I have tried everything from repair to checkdisk, console rec, scannow, as well as usual malwarescans. Factory reset didn't work nor a different monitor. So at a loss :cry

I would like to suggest you one step to click on start and then run and then type MSCONFIG and you need to disable all the startup items and then try to boot your system and check if there is any difference. There might be some programs which is causing that delay. Also you can try to run hardware diagnostics.

hi Dell, thanks for reply. I did try msconfig, no change. I have since done a more thorough disc/system/files/sectors check during which bad sectors were repaired, sadly I missed the end of the check so not sure what else took place, and I also replaced the dvi cable and did a fix boot sequence. The system is starting perfectly. I have shutdown and restarted several times to make sure and all is still well as of 1 hour ago. So fingers crossed that it will remain so. Many thanks.

 

Click START > Run...
enter eventvwr and click OK.
select Application in the left panel
Look for an entry with Winlogon in the Source column and 1001 in the Event column.

That will show you the report for Chkdsk that was run on the System drive during startup.
