Being smart is kind stupid sometimes.

I don't think of myself as a super genius or anything. I know just a bit more than most people I know and sometimes it sucks.:-D

I have This desire to learn anything about anything. If I'm reading an article and they use a word i don't understand, I'll look it up. The other day my girl friends car wouldn't start and we called out friend Brian and he was explain car stuff to me and i wanted to go home and learn about engines and batteries and stuff. I don't know, maybe this is just what geeks do. :-D

The point of my rant is sometimes I want to know too much, then I find out way more than I wanted to know, as before I lived contently in my own ignorance. I now know something I didn't want to know as it's a scary concept. Blah, does anyone know if there some way to turn my brain off, perhaps?:-D

Well, don't ask me. I've lived like that all my life. Then sometimes I make the mistake that others may actually want rub two neurons together and learn something, or better still, teach me something. I usually then get told that I'm way too smart for them and they start talking about football or some drivel. All I wanted was an intelligent conversation, not a compliment...Grrr!!rolleyes

Learning halfway about something can be dangerous. I've seen that on MGs where people know just enough to make them a danger to their machine and others'. :-D

Mostly, I think there's power in knowledge, though. I'm probably too selective with stuff I want to learn about. I wish I wanted to learn more about politics and the world. That is so relevant right now.

    Hey, That's me also.

That's how I learned a bit about engines, the majority from my father though.;)

Have you ever been told, "You Think Too Much" ?
    I have.
That really ticks me off, or p****S me off.

It seems that learning something new, anything, makes us feel better about ourselves - less vulnerable, more competent.

Sometimes, intellectual stimulation about a topic that interests you is just pleasant.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to know more and increase your knowledge, as long as it doesn't involve something harmful.

The reason people had (or have) unusual beliefs, superstitions and fears - some rational and some irrational, is usually due to
a lack of understanding and insight, without which we are helpless, powerless or ineffective.

That also led to ritual practices which were sometimes brutal, cruel and destructive.
Witch hunts, human sacrifice, scapegoats and persecution are some examples.

The human desire to know and understand is what brought us from homeless nomads to lives that are more secure and comfortable.

Sorry for getting so dark, but I think that's true.

One sure fire way to turn your brain off and stop wanting to know things is :- Get married, the ladies (bless them) know everything :wave

Not being able to turn your brain off has both its benefits and pitfalls.

In the case of a mechanic or other person trying to sell you something, it pays to ask questions. As an example, when the AC tech came to my house three weeks ago and said I needed a new outside unit ($2900 :eek), I asked him to show me the problem. The wires to the compressor were melted and the compressor had a hole blown in it. Thinking it might have been lightening, I asked if a thunderstorm could have done this. His "definitely yes" answer means (if I'm lucky) my homeowners' insurance will cover part of the damage.

The biggest downfall is when your thinking and problem solving abilities are far superior to your boss or supervisor. Even when you handle such a situation with tact and kid gloves, people above you tend to notice your abilities. Although some respect and appreciate problem solving, there are at least an equal number who feel threatened by an underling's intelligence. This usually results in a not so friendly work environment and, in extreme cases, firing the very person who attempts to make the boss look good.

The only consolation I take in not being able to turn my brain off is that I'm in good company. Thomas Edison, George Eastman (Kodak), Einstein and Steve Jobs are but a few people who suffered with the same problem.

True story except, I hate reality tv. I just want to reach through the screen and punch someone. :-D

Yes @ being a danger, I feel that way about myself sometimes LOL and I agree, the more you know, the better but in my case, I want to know everything! No lie. It's part of the reason I've done so many things (making my own clothing/jewelry, cooking/baking every recipe I can get my hands on, re-tiling my own kitchen floor for example) because I need to know how to do these things!!

The problem in that, is sometimes, I wish I didn't have to know. Without getting to personal, I stumbled across a girl's blog, while searching for a picture, and I started to read it. The way she described herself and her life, I thought "hmm, she reminds me of me". Then she mentioned that she was diagnosed with *something* and me being the nosy, must know it all, I looked it up because I had never heard of it before. So, I did a lot of research on it and I came to the scary conclusion, it’s highly likely I have this as well. :cry Now, if I could have turned my brain off from needing to know everything, I could still be living happily in my own ignorance. :-D

Oh yes, all the time, I am highly logical and extremely analytical (even to a fault). Everything must make logical sense, and if it doesn't, I analyze it until it does. I sometimes drive myself crazy doing this :-D but the plus side is, I'm usually extremely accurate in pegging people. If you've got an ulterior motive, I'll figure it out! :major

That's how you know it's working. It's supressing the higher functions that make you know that's no use. And that you shouldn't do that. :-D

This subject strikes a chord with me, I'm always curious on how things work... I'm a fan of the British TV programme QI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QI Would you believe it QI is both a wireless power standard, a programming language and a hardware project...

Perhaps you need a hobby that requires some brain-power, such as puzzle solving or learning to play a musical instrument.

Is it true the women multi-task better than men?

...and remember "Pregnancy baby brain lapse 'a myth'", so that's not an option: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8491493.stm :-D

Curiousity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back.

Of course its true that women can multi-task better than men, thats why we keep them in the kitchen, cooking, washing, ironing and other stuff they can get their tiny minds around.:-D
