When I hit standby the computer appears to go into it,then when I hit a key to bring it out,it restarts?
    Help please.

It's not clear what your problem is.

Normally, if you go to the Shut Down dialog and choose Stand By, the computer goes into Stand By mode.

Any action with the Keyboard or Mouse will Terminate Stand By.

Are you referring to Stand By or Hibernate?

Its standby and the problem is as I described:confused

Set computer to NOT REBOOT on error.
An error is encountered when it comes out of standby but since it is set to reboot on error, you never see what is wrong, it just reboots.

Not really sure about your upgrade question, but this link describes how to do what above posters have mentioned in an easy step by step instructions. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/disautorestart.htm.

Upgrade is determined by whether your present computer configuration can run Win7 or Win8.

    Hope this helps! :)

I dont know weather an upgrade will help?
I am also having freezing mouse problems:cry

It is always better to fix existing problems before considering an upgrade and hoping that the upgrade will cure them.

Please follow the steps in the link that I posted, and if it should happen again there will be an error code on the blue screen. This is important in that it can help determine what is wrong with your system. Write the error code down and include it in your next post.

    :)

Windows version are: 3, 3.1, 95, 98, ME, (NT and 2000 mainly business use) XP, Vista and 7. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows
Computers with Windows 8 will not be sold until October.
Very bad idea to upgrade until you fix problems with your current install.

I cannot seem to get it to boot from disc to Repair/check disc, should I be starting up in "safe mode"?

    Novice MajorGeek

If you're trying to use your original installation disk that wouldn't surprise me. After going back and reading some of your previous threads, your original disk contained SP1? And you are trying to boot it after going to SP3?

Should that be the case, then you should see an error "Windows has detected a newer version on your hard drive than what you are trying to install" and refuses to boot the CD, or something along these lines. Is this what you are seeing?

If your original install CD was an actual Windows installation CD instead of a recovery disk, then you can slipstream SP3 into it. This link explains it fully, http://www.lancelhoff.com/how-to-slipstream-service-pack-3-into-windows-xp/.

Also see that you didn't listen to plodr's advice about running it for a week or two before trying to change things!

As it is a new install, it shouldn't be missing any system files right off the bat,
unless they were deleted. I also noticed that your system was an older one similar to the one that I'm using now. I encountered a " shutting down issue" with the original XP, changed settings in Power Management, and haven't had any problems since.

I believe that all that I described is in the link from Microsoft that I provided. Hope this helps! :)

  22. greybuffalo

    greybuffalo Staff Sergeant

Spot on! thats what I am seeing.
It has been way past two weeks.:)

    Novice MajorGeek

Well, as its been two weeks and the standby issue is all that you are having, I can see that you are ready to tinker/modify!

Next step is to create a slipstreamed installation CD. You never mentioned whether your original CD was a recovery CD, or a Windows Install CD? I've only used original Windows CDs for my source, so can't guarantee a Recovery CD. I included an nlite link in one of my earlier posts, but I prefer to use AutoStreamer for my own personal use, as it is easy. This link is a tutorial on how to use AutoStreamer, http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/using_autostreamer/using_autostreamer.shtml.

It is nice to have an installation CD with SP3 on it, but I honestly believe that your problems are in power management, same as the ones that I had. Hopefully this will help a little! :)

  24. greybuffalo

    greybuffalo Staff Sergeant

    Novice,thanks for your time.
I have tried power options, that does not work.
I have the Windows Install CD.
I would love to have that installation CD with SP3 , unfortunately on my last cd disc,I burnt unsuccessfully with the nlite program a disc,I was a bit confused as to where to place that "new folder" on my desktop or in the xp files?.
So when I get some more cd's I will try AutoStreamer
What do you suggest I change in "Power management",as there are not a lot of options? :)

    greybuffalo,

Please understand that I'm shooting in the dark without having your system in front of me! Did you actually read the Microsoft link in one of my earlier posts? If so, it provides ways to check and see what is causing your problem with Stand By. I don't exactly remember which setting that I changed to correct my issue with XP RTM, but the SPs have corrected many problems with the original.

I would start with the BIOS and check under Power Management. Make sure that ACPI is enabled if supported. The Power Settings in Control Panel are useful in that you can shut off both the monitor and hard drive after a certain period of inactivity. I personally don't use either Stand By or Hibernate, as I've never had a reason to.

As for where to put the New Folder when trying to burn/make a slipstreamed CD, I always put it in My Documents, as it's easy to find.

Just out of curiosity, what type and make of system are you running. I went back and read all your posts and didn't see it mentioned. :)

    Yes,
I did read your earlier post and tried all those things in vain :)

I just searched for your computer, and first hit was for a notebook? Also found that ASRock also makes a motherboard for desk tops with the same numbers. So which do you have?

Since none of the Power Management options solve your problem, lets try a different angle. Did your computer ever go into Stand By and come out of it without issues? :)

  28. greybuffalo

    My computer is a Nvida.
Yes,it did have no issues before :)

In post #4, I told the OP to set the computer to not reboot on errors. I don't think this has been done.
The computer has an error when resuming from standby and reboots instead of coming out of standby. Until we can see the BSOD info, we are trying to troubleshoot an unknown error.

  30. greybuffalo

    greybuffalo Staff Sergeant

Actually in the "power opinions" there is only about prompting for password, about standby? nothing else?

  31. Novice

    Novice MajorGeek

@plodr, I agree and provided the OP with an easy to follow tutorial on how to set the system not to reboot on error in post #12.

@greybuffalo, You still didn't tell me whether you have a laptop or a desk top computer! And it does make a difference.

Also thought that you said that there were many options under Power Management, not just one about password on resume under Stand By?

Nvida doesn't manufacture computers to the best of my limited knowledge, only the chipsets that go in them.

I've spent four hours researching your issue and have came up with a few things, but will wait for your response.

Did you set your computer not to reboot on error? :)

  32. greybuffalo

    greybuffalo Staff Sergeant

    I have desk top
Yes I did set computer not to reboot on error
There are many options under Power Management(mine says "Power management") but only that one for "standby :)"

Glad to see that you have a desk top. Are you referring to the BIOS options or the ones in Control Panel as asking for a password?

Stand By and Hibernate have long been problems with XP, from research I see that many fixed the problem while others couldn't/didn't. Being that Stand By worked originally with SP1 and not with SP3 makes me think that it is a driver issue. I'm sure there will be other opinions!

Nice that you set your computer not to reboot on error!

Please do a search on your computer for hiberfil.sys and see if it is there. If so, please inform. :)

Rather than going through a long list of things to do and try, please download this, http://www.dimaware.com/shutdown/shutdown1home.html. It is free for home use and has helped several people with the issues that you have.

SP3 created problems in some systems that couldn't/weren't resolved from my research today. This program helped many with the same issues that you are having. No, I do not endorse it, haven't ever used it, and will not guarantee it to fix your problem, although it did fix others.

Menu should be self expalanatory from what I saw.

Try it at your own risk, and the worst that could happen is a reinstall of the OS if it doesn't work as intended. :)

  36. greybuffalo

    greybuffalo Staff Sergeant

I will try that program, after I have made a recovery disc with SP3 on.
Oh,I see that new program you recommend is to slipstream SP2 NOT SP3,so I should be slipstreaming SP3...right,it superceeds SP2 ?

How do I do this please
    :)

Yes, you are correct in that you should be slipstreaming SP3. The tutorial was written when SP2 came out, but works the same with SP3.

As for how to check in BIOS for Power Management, you should see a caption when you boot your computer to hit * key for setup at the bottom of your screen. I used the * instead of listing all the keys that are commonly used to get into BIOS. On mine ( I also use an ASRock motherboard with AMI BIOS ) it is the delete key. Yours may be different.

What burning software are you using?

You and others may think it strange that I ask you to download a program in an attempt to fix your problem, but in my research I found that it solved the problem for many people, and hopefully will do the same for you. :)

As you have mention a freezing mouse issue, please go into Device Manager and delete all the mice drivers that you have and reboot, then try Stand By again.

    I am using infra recorder.

When I had finished that nlite program,it said "you are now ready to burn image",so I burnt it,but I'm not sure if it was supposed to be image?what thinks you :confused

If you actually burned the ISO file to a disk, then it will be of no use to you. That was why I inquired about the burning software. I use this to write image files to disk, http://www.majorgeeks.com/ImgBurn_d4870.html. Checked the Infra Recorder specs and it didn't say anything about writing image files only recording them. Put the disk that you burned in your computer and see what it does. :)

It looks like these files are the one's that were supposed to be burnt, but as image?what you think? can I use these to burn with your program as image? :)

If the folder/image is still on your hard drive, then yes as it would show up as an ISO file. Then ImgBurn could write it to disc. Just for grins, reboot your computer while the CD is still in the drive and see if anything happens! :)

O.K I will try that reboot with the disc in.
When I reboot,I press F11,then how do I get" BIOS for Power Management" and what do I do there again? :)

Sort of strange, as the link that you listed is Microsofts SP3 for IT, and that is the same one that I was going to link to. Following is MG's link to SP3, http://windows-xp-service-pack-3.todownload.com/?gclid=CNnSh7iy97ECFcGf7Qodw0gAdA. Either one should work!

Please delete everything that you did with nlite. I run AutoStreamer from My Documents as well as placing the temperorary folder there too. Please follow the tutorial as well.

From looking at your screens, the original CD contained SP2 instead of SP1?

    :)

I have un-installed all Nlite stuff, but with the slipstreamer,as per the image(not allowed to upload the image again)
I add the first thing, that being my original windows cd,then when I click on the sp file,Slipstream does a duck.exits?? thats how far I get
Could you tell what I am doing wrong, why it wont alow me to direct it to the SP3 download on my desk top :confused
