I was having problems installing SW:TOR and was told it could be because a infected file, and was old i should download TDSS Killer to detect and eliminate the infected file.
It found and eliminated the file, i don't know what file was it.
The installation began and i left for a little bit, 5 minutes later, BSOD!

*A recent hardware or software change might be the cause...blah blah*

    StartUp repair:
*Windows cannot repair this computer automatically*

System restore wont fix the problem

    System Image Recovery
*Windows cannot find a system image on this computer*

    Windows Memory Diagnostic
    Didn't detect anything

what else can i do? maybe it is a virus that caused this? :cry

The thing is, i don't know if it was a virus that caused this.
How can i find what the problem is?

By following the instructions given by plodr in #3, that will rule in or out any malware, once you have the all clear, and if you still have problems, return here and describe them and we'll try to get your PC sorted out.

well, windows wont start even on safe mode, what can i do?

If the following are all true:
    a) The computer can not boot into safe mode
    b) StartUp repair does not work: Windows cannot repair this computer automatically
    c) System restore wont fix the problem (assuming you have tried this)
    d) System Image Recovery does not work: Windows cannot find a system image on this computer

You are left with two options: if you made restore/recovery disks, use them or do a clean install.

I have an USB with system recovery options, isnt that the same as a recovery disk?
If not, can i create a restore/recovery disk from any computer and use it on mine? thanks for the answers

You should be able to use the USB recovery options. Or make a CD from a computer using the same 32 or 64 bit version of Win7.

If you can boot to the USB when it tries to repair there should be a link on the left where you can view details. What does it say the error is related to?

BTW: What happened with System Restore? Did it give you a choice of dates and then you tried one and it completed the restore but it still won't start?

Is there a way i can save the log and attach it here? i can't find anything about what the error is related to.

About the system restore, i tried several dates and it still wont start.

I haven't been in RE for a while you could try highlighting the text and see if you can right click and copy it. Then click the Next button and choose command prompt and type notepad and hit enter. Then paste in notepad and save to your USB. Take the USB to your working computer.

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

While you are saving in Notepad get the drive letter of you USB flash.
Then back in the command prompt go ahead and run this command to get a copy of your BCD file.

bcdedit /enum all > L:\bcdall.txt (where L is the letter of your USB)

    Upload that file as well.

By the way what brand computer is this?

I hope this is what you need.

the command is giving problems with the last part: "\bcdall.txt is not recognized..''

no brand, a friend built it for me

I'm not getting much from that log.
Since System Restore ran but did not fix the problem I think you might as well go ahead and run the fixboot and fixmbr commands you saw in the other thread. With a custom built machine there is no downside to running the fixmbr command. Mostly Dells have custom MBRs that are best left alone unless absolutely necessary.

So back in command prompt run these two commands and then try to boot the computer normally.

    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot

Used the commands, windows still wont start :s

Do you have just one HD in that machine?

Try this command one more time. Notice that one is a backslash and one is a forward slash. Remember to change L to the letter for your USB flash.

    bcdedit /enum all > L:\bcdall.txt

    Yes, just one HD.
    command still not working

Although it looks like automatic repair did a chkdsk, do a manual one just to rule out that I am not misreading your log.

    chkdsk d: /r

  19. Dlomaximo

    Dlomaximo Private E-2

chkdsk wont work when i add the d: /r part : "/r is not recognized..."

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

You should be using the / below the question mark on your keyboard. The command should work. There is a space between the : and the /

    Sorry, it's not working :cry

IF you just run a chkdsk does it find any errors in the results?

When that is done try this:

I've never heard of this before and I am going to see if it brings anything up on my computer.

  23. Dlomaximo

    Dlomaximo Private E-2

    No errors found on chkdsk.
The bios screen loads way too fast so i don't know if F10 doesn't work or im just missing the right moment, i even have problems accessing the advanced boot options :(

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

F8 for Advanced options or F10 for the Edit Boot Menu take effect as the BIOS menu ends. So you can hit them at any time, repeatedly during the BIOS screen but you are aiming towards the end of the BIOS screen.

I'd still like to know if F10 brings up that menu and if it does what happens if you delete the /minint part if yours looks like this [ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /MININT] and hit enter.

I was also wondering if from the Advanced/Safe Mode options if Last Know Good Configuration brings up anything. And if Disable Automatic Restart on Error gives you a blue screen with any error codes or file names that might point to the problem.

But see if F10 and deleting /minint gives you anything new.

    Dlomaximo Private E-2

Deleted /minint...Windows is working now :D
Writing from the affected pc atm, everything looks good.
Is there a way to check what the problem was? Should i start using as normal?

  26. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

When it started up did you get any messages about system restore being completed or no mention of it? Let me know.

I think that F10 thing is an one time deal where it has to be done each time you restart until changes are made to the BCD file.

This is the thread I was reading but you don't necessarily want to do all those steps since they are tailored for that person's problem.

I'm not really familiar with editing the BCD but here, she recommends a command which I believe removes the /minint from the default status.

If it were me, I think I would try restarting normally and see if it starts. If not then I would do the F10 minint thing to get back into Windows and then execute the above command.

  27. Dlomaximo

    Dlomaximo Private E-2

I restarted and it would give me the BSOD and restart as always, so i had to deleted the /minint again, executing the command now.

About the system restore, it was completed, restored to 28/7.

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Oh, you want to try and restart after the command to see if it goes directly to Windows.

  29. Dlomaximo

    Dlomaximo Private E-2

The command worked, i don't have to do the F10 thing everytime i restart now.
Anything else i should check? :p

Great! I was second guessing myself, afraid it would blue screen.

I think you are fine. If you have further problems you might want to run a chkdsk. In Windows it is go to Computer then right-click the C: drive and select Properties. Under the Tools tab select Error Checking and then Check Now button. Just leave the first box checked and hit Start. It will schedule for the next reboot. When you reboot it will run and then start Windows. You are probably fine without it but with only the first box checked, it only takes a few minutes. Your log did show a problem running chkdsk but I couldn't tell if it eventually resolved itself later.

finished chkdsk, where can i find the log of that?

  32. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Go to Start and type in power. Windows Power Shell will come up in the results so click that. Copy and paste the following into the window and hit enter. I'm not sure if the results are sorted oldest to newest or vice versa so today's chkdsk may be at the top or the bottom of the results.

    Code:
    get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message
Edit: I'm off to bed. I'll check back in the morning.

Got it, it's in spanish tho, should i attach it? or am i good to go? :)

As long as the chkdsk says it finished checking files successfully then I think you are good to go.

I believe what happened here is that TDDSkiller set your computer to boot by default from miniNT which is a small recovery OS. Your computer had trouble loading that module. (If it is any consolation when I did tested using F10 and added /minint to my startup my computer crashed too! So I don't think it is critical to figure out why.)

The last command you used editing the BCD to remove the /minint flag told your PC to startup from your regular Windows which is working fine. So if all this started with a program installation problem I don't think you have to worry about a virus. The system restore should have taken you back before the failed program installation so I don't foresee any further problems.

If you are worried about a virus then you can go through the steps of getting the appropriate logs needed for a post in the malware section and ask them to take a look.

I hope this information helps. :)

One last thought is because you don't have any recovery or installation discs you may want to investigate using a program to make an image of your HD so that you would have a way of reloading your system if you were to run into problems in the future. Macrium Reflect and Todo Backup both have free programs for creating backup images.
