    hi,

I read the related forums and saw from kestrel13 this FRST file was needed in order to begin the process of removing this malware; FRST file is attached. Am ready for next steps to get rid of this horrible malware. Thank you so much. Really appreciate what you are doing.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Actually the proper instructions would be to follow the below link first:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

so that we would have more information that is required to fully check your PC out. But since you already have FRST, please do the below which we need before we can actually start a fix.

Boot to System Recovery Options and run FRST again.
Type the below bolded text in the edit box after "Search:".

    services.exe

    Then click the Search button.

It will make a log (Search.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See How to attach)

Download this >> View attachment fixlist.txt

Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST.exe on your flash drive.
Now reboot back into the System Recovery Options as you did previously.
Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (See how to attach)

Now from normal Windows, run MGtools per the below instructions and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file.

    Using MGtools

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,
Do I need to leave internet access available and/or firewall while this program is running? I started it 7 hours ago and it's only on 2/10 for repairs....is there any chance it's 'stuck'/hung? Do I need to restart it? It got through to this 2nd portion 8 minutes after starting, and hasn't gone further. The status still says 'working' and the bar is spinning. I do have internet access open and the firewall enabled.

    Thanks.

Actually your Windows Firewall service was broken which is why we are running this.

If it is still showing activity in the window listing registry hives and/or files and folder permissions.....etc then just let it continue. The more you have on your PC, the longer it takes.

It may have run faster if your protection software (AVG and Ad-Aware ) were disabled.

hmm....well, it's been 10 hours now and it's still showing the same thing and no new updates in the log, still on 2 of 10. The pop-up window (gray) that shows what was last 'done' has not changed in hours either. I have had the AVG firewall active since starting it. At one point, I did turn off the internet access before turning it back on - could that have stalled the program? Does this program access the internet while running? I find it hard to believe after 10 hours it would still be on 2 of 10?

  11. jetjockchicago

    jetjockchicago Private E-2

Ok, it was still stuck after 18 hours, so I closed the pop-up status window, and that actually allowed the program to continue and it went from 2/10 to 10/10 and finished in about 5 minutes. I have attached the MGTools log and you can see if it worked correctly.

I'm not sure how things are running yet, have to look a bit. I'm running a couple of scans to see if anything is picked up as well.

    You're logs are clean now.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I thought things were running correctly, but I just got a redirect to the same 3rd party search engine that started this mess (www.searchignited.com). Also, I tried to run windows updates and I got these error codes:

    "WindowsUpdate_80246008" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

So, there is obviously still the infection in the system. I did the last steps you sent but accidentally missed step 4 and went on....once I did step 6, I couldn't do step 4 cause that file was removed, so I went into UAC and reset it manually. Other than that, I followed all the steps and didn't have any indication until these final steps. Ugh....do we need to start the process over?

Download the below file and save it to your Desktop

    BITS.reg

Then right click on it and select Merge. If prompted, allow it to be added to your registry. Then reboot and see if there is any change with Windows Update.

Also please download OTL by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Right mouse click on the OTL icon on your desktop and select Run as Administrator
    • Check the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
    • Check the "Standard Output".
    • Change the setting of "Drivers" and "Services" to "All"
    • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the [IMG] text-field.
      Code:
      activex
      netsvcs

    • Now click the [IMG] button.
    • One report will be created:
      • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Attach OTL.txt to your next message. (How to attach)

Sorry, but when I 'right click' the BITS.reg file, there is no option to merge. Options like: open, convert to pdf, scan with..., open with..., share with.., add to bits.reg.rar (is that it?), winzip, compress, etc.

Which (if any) do I do from the above choices?

    Thanks.

I also did a search of my 'C' drive, and saw no other files with the name BITS.reg - I thought to merge files they had to have the same name? I attached a screen shot of the 'right-click' options I have.

Please redownload the bit.reg file again. Also make sure you that you have enabled viewing of file extensions so that you can really see full file names. See the below:

How to view hidden, system files & folders!

Then try to merge in the bits.reg file again. If this does not work, we will do it a different way.

Sorry...I was able to change the setting for the file extensions, but still no 'merge' option after downloading the Bits.reg file.

Okay let's take a different approach. First we need to run a new scan tool.

Now download and save a current copy of combofix.exe and save it directly onto your Desktop folder. Then right click it and select Run As Administrator. Do not disturb it by clicking in the window that opens or it may stall. After it finishes, it may reboot your PC. Attach the C:\combofix.txt log that it creates.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

    You're welcome.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,

Sorry for the delay....had a lot of work issues I was dealing with. Things seem to be running 'ok'...but strangely, that search engine redirect still crops up every once in a while. Does that mean the system isn't totally clean? Should I run any particular scan again? Thanks for all your help and patience on this...greatly appreciated!

    1. With which browser? Is it occurring on multipe browsers ( test it )? Only have one open at anytime!
    2. When exactly do they occur and where are you redirected to?
    3. Does it happen in safe boot mode too?
Since 2 weeks have past since last posting logs and a lot can change in 2 weeks, we need a new log.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
