As some of you know I am returning back to school as a student. For the last little bit I have been working as a PCG (personal care giver) as the hours are very flexible. I have learned so much about aging an issues that occur when we lose our mobility or something seriously goes wrong and hospitalization is required. So now I wonder, how many people have a living will and how many people have named a power of attorney that will carry out your wishes? Have you ever discussed if you want to be resuscitated with the people you love? This sounds like morbid questions but I never did any of the above myself and now I'm wondering how many people do. :confused

Its actually interesting to me that people don't make sure they have a living will or at the very least tell people what they want to happen. There's been so many cases that you read about where families get into legal battles about a relative in a vegetative state or similar. That right there is the perfect time to say 'this is what I want'.

My whole family knows my wishes, but yes, I do have a living will...both my husband and I do along with my sister, the attorney, having power of attorney in the event that something were to happen to both of us.

Sensible question, (not morbid ) I'd like inputs on this. Don't have a living will as yet, but its very valid I feel. Don't know the laws too well- in the sense a will can be contested. Indian laws are a tad vague. Time for research and legal counsel.

Plus, I only have one brat 14 yrs old (my avatar here) it's all hers anyway.
Prolly, should set up some fund for schooling and college and expenses for a comfortable life and further disbursement of property and monies.

Heck, I better check with as my parents as to what I'm getting. Just j/k as I have no idea and am not interested. Well not entirely. :-D

    Cheers..

Well, my only relative here is also on the title of my property, (only he don't know it, eh - so no arsenic in my Cornflakes LOL). Guess that means he gets all my other stuff too - except certain monies etc., which are willed to my kids, (once again, they don't know, either).
My friends keep asking what funeral arrangements I've made and would I like to be buried with them. Only thing is they all want me buried, (or cremated) next to them. I don't mind being popular, but that's a bit scary, i.m.o. rolleyes
Dealt with deceased estates a lot in my old nursing days, but guess things have changed since then. I hope that school and family are going well for you these days.:)

With the number of medical adventures I've had the last few years, I've got everything nailed down and written in stone. My living will and my Advance Directive not only names my mother as my medical executor, it goes on to give three alternates in order in case something happens involving more than one of us.

I don't have an actual will, because I don't actually have anything. All of my retirement and insurance accounts name specific beneficiaries, and all the rest of my stuff doesn't really matter. There are a few things I would like to go to specific people, and those are listed in my living will. I never have enough money to bother with the cash, and all of my investments are tied into retirement accounts so it doesn't matter.

I like how some people just assume it's you Vik, and start calling you "cutie", or some-such. Which would be great if it really was you, or you were gay or something.roflmao

I've been watching this one family struggle with the POA thing. The person appointed as the POA would be considered negligent to the point of loss of life. The child that wants to step up to the plate and would be more qualified was not named by his mother and it seems that she would contest it if he tried. Had not been for this son, she would have been dead a month ago. I'm just the PCG, there is nothing I can do to help him gain control of his mothers affairs. After watching this struggle, I have decided to write out a well detailed living will outlining any possible scenario with full instructions on how to deal with them. There are times I can see being resuscitated and then there are reasons not to. I think explicit instructions are needed so not to confuse when to resuscitate and when not to.

@ Phantom. Life is still a wild roller coaster ride. My eldest is on new medication now. So far so good, he seems well. A few months back a doctor that was covering for his regular specialist told him he was dying, turns out she was looking at the wrong file. His regular specialist cleared that up for us last week. As for the schooling ... it's going slowly. Work seems to always get in the way and paychecks are priority.

This is not a morbid subject.
Everyone no matter what age should make a will,i made my first when i was 20 years old (it is compulsory in the military) and have periodically updated it to keep abreast of changes in my financial standing.

The death taxes here in Belgium are crippling and if you die intestate (without a will or dependents) everything goes to the state so it is the national pastime trying to circumvent these laws.
A few years ago after some expensive legal advice i set up a trust that allows my wife to inherit everything and to draw on the accounts without tax liabilities then upon her death the whole package goes to the blue cross which is an animal shelter again without tax liabilities.
Our living will only covers everyday things like our home, autos and burial so not a lot of tax to pay there.
You never know when it is your turn to cross to the other side so it is prudent to get your affairs in order.

I have always wondered about that trust thing. I hear that it has benefits of certain protection where people can not touch it nor can government agencies. I think I am going to do some research on it as I have a son that may need caring for later on in life.

Not entirely related to the topic, but I thought I was reading about myself here.

I have a little less than a year left of school.

SMT, this thread has made me remember I need to actually create a "will" its something I have been meaning to do for a few years, just didnt want to think of my own mortality just now.

I do have some financial things written up to who gets what, just not everything.

As for resucitation, not thought of that to be honest, maybe a I need to and have something in place for that event.

Hey Adrynalyne, been a while. Good to hear that you're almost finished. What are you majoring in?

I am learning everyday just how important it is for a living will and or a power of attorney. One lady forgot to let her family know where she kept it and they are still looking for it. Guess it would be a good idea to give a copy to someone. I know I am still working out all the details.
