    Hi y'all,

Hoping sommeone can help. IF my computer shuts down it wont start backup, screen and everything else works fine. I have to kill power at mains and plug back in dozens of times before it kicks back into life, even when it finally begins to startup it will still keep shutting down another 8 or 9 times before it even tries to boot up. I have no clue as to what it might be. I need help.

Brand and model of computer as well as version of windows running? Have you cleaned the computer out inside to be sure it is not shutting down because of overheating?
Nave you tested the power supply to be sure it is supplying enough power?

Have hoovered dust from inside machine with anti static nozle. When I plug into mains fans attempt to start, that is to say they jerk, speakers switch on and my daughter games console controler recharger runns.

Also each time I plug in to mains it seems to do a fraction more, a minute fraction.

I have no circuit tester anymore, my son gave it a bath in the toilet.

Unplug everything from the computer except what's crucial, mouse and keyboard.
Uninstall any PCI cards that you don't need.
If you have onboard graphics but upgraded to a graphics card uninstall that and go back to onboard graphics.
If one of these things are faulting and drawing too much power that will cause problems.
Check all wires coming out of the power supply, make sure an unused end isn't grounding.

    Hi Geckoguy,

PSU has safety circuit against over voltage and current and under voltage. Your symptom appears that the PSU is shutting down from over current. It has to have the power removed to reset the safety circuit. Seems that the help you are getting is right on.

    Good Luck, Jim

The computer in question is a desktop. Please read post #3, robbo26, before you make a suggestion that does not apply.
